Self applied temporary filling advice

A massive filling has come out of my tooth when it got stuck on something (a hard gum) and the whole thing was pulled out, there's a name for that type of filling that I can't remember but it's the kind they made in a lab because it's so big.

The dentist (private) can't see me until the week after next; appointments are so hard to get around here, even privately, and there's absolutely zero chance of NHS. I've said the exposed tooth is painful and the receptionist suggested I apply a temporary filling from the pharmacist. It seems a bit risky to me, what if I seal in bacteria? Won't that make it worse? I'm worried it's infected because it's painful. I am applying orajel to the exposed bit but I'm not even sure how long is safe to do that for. It feels like some nerve is exposed.

Which is worse, leaving it exposed or applying the temporary filling? Thanks.
