Did you have something to eat before taking it?

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 24/01/2024 10:19

Doxycycline is awful, I’m on it long term and it still makes me feel sick at times.

I’ve found it’s better if I take it after I’ve eaten, and I often take it with milk rather than water. Whatever you do take it with make sure you drink the whole glass and stay upright for at least half an hour after you have taken it.

if it doesn’t get any better you can ask your GP for some anti sickness medication I have some at home for the times it makes me feel sick.

Oh my gosh. I just came on here to make the exact same post! I've taken it this morning for a lower respiratory infection and I feel horrendous. After reading the leaflet and side effects it does say vomiting can be a side effect. I also have gallbladder and liver issues and it says not to take if you have these issues along with some other pretty scary common side effects. I'm not going to take anymore and either let my infection run it's cause (I'm pretty sure it's viral anyway as my whole house is sick with same thing) or I'll call GP and ask for something else.

I've had antibiotics so many times in 2023 and one lot was doxycycline, I think it was for a nasty chest infection. I didn't find it pleasant but it wasn't awful but doctor warned me it could make me feel really sick and if so I could halve the dose and take it for twice as long, I didn't as I wanted it over with but I wonder if you speak to doctor if that would be possible. Obviously don't do it because my doctor said it to me but might be worth asking. Pharmacist might also be able to advise. Good luck, hope you get it sorted. I'm hoping for a healthy 2024.

I’ve only recently suffered this, despite having taken this and similar many times before. I found loading up with good probiotics made a huge difference. So, Yakult, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, miso - all things I’d usually eat occasionally but just made sure I had more of them. Really helped.

Hi op. Doxycycline is a horrible antibiotic! It also makes me vomit profusely and I feel so ill with it. I can't tolerate it and I don't take it when gp prescribes me it. Erythromycin or clarithromycin is usually the antibiotic that I can tolerate as unfortunately I'm allergic to penicillin. Hope it gets better for you!

Hullabaloo31 · 24/01/2024 10:36

I take it regularly and never have any side effects at all, but always take it after food.

Wheeeeee · 24/01/2024 10:53

My DH was on long term doxycycline. He had gastro side effects to start with but found the trick was to take it with a whole pint of water and make sure to stay upright for a good while after taking it.

Hi ladies thanks for the replies.. I didn't have it with food I jus got up brushed my teeth and as I'm making the kids breakfast I thought oh let's take my antibiotic... Was sitting down and felt really sick and had to run to the loo.. maybe I need to eat even tho there's no leaflet in the box!!! But searching the internet it says to eat and then take it.. I have hydrosalpinx in alot of pelvic pain so they Wana try antibiotics before further investigation.... I just want to get better .. IV neglected my children even tho DH has them and dies a.good job but I feel as if I'm lacking as a mother ... I think it's the mom guilt :(

You must take it after food, it's awful on an empty stomach

Ahwig · 24/01/2024 11:20

I was very sick with it. First time I presumed it was because I was ill anyway second time not so much. I felt awful and it wasn't clearing my respiratory infection up as I couldn't keep it down. Anytime I need an antibiotics I tell the gp not to prescribe this and they have found an alternative that works well.

Sara08 · 24/01/2024 11:47

My next dose is in the evening so I will have it with food and see how I feel.. I had it yesterday evening and I was ok but this morning it was vile 🤮

Rosiiee · 24/01/2024 11:58

Did the same for me. You have to eat first then wait 20min or so for it to settle in your belly and theeeeeen you can take the tablets. It’s a whole process 😂

Sara08 · 24/01/2024 12:00

@Rosiiee it really is isn't it 😂😂 did u vomit pretty quickly when u had it on a empty stomach...

Rosiiee · 24/01/2024 12:04

Yeah I’d say I was sick within 15min or so. Bloody awful. I had to take it daily for months for malaria when I lived in Africa so I eventually mastered it but it’s an awful antibiotic 🤢 gave me super clear skin on the flip side though!

SadCelticBunny · 24/01/2024 12:08

Hi, I am exactly the same.
I am allergic to penicillin and other ABs but have needed long term treatment in the past.
I take an antiemetic, Cyclizine. It really helps though I do avoid ABs if I can.

Can you contact your GP and ask for an antiemetic?

By the way, it's the most awful feeling if I take it without the cyclizine. I always feel as if there is a creature squirming away inside me, desperate to escape!

Moodycoo · 24/01/2024 12:28

Doxycycline should always be given with VERY strict advise on how to take it. You must have eaten something (let it settle in your stomach), take it standing up with a BIG glass of water and drink as much as you can do it gets down into your stomach. STAY UPRIGHT for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Its a great antibiotic, it works brilliantly for sinus issues and infections, but if you don't follow the "rules" it will make you throw up.... with very little warning! I ended up throwing up on a London street when I though just having a milkshake would be enough to line my stomach.......

TheChosenTwo · 24/01/2024 12:33

Oh god I was sick a few times taking this as an anti-malarial, it fucked up my contraceptive pill and then I ended up pregnant 😭
for a while I just thought I was poorly with a holiday hangover but I did think that was strange as I’d never been sick with a hangover before. Anyway it was later unpicked and linked to the doxycycline 🫣

Sara08 · 24/01/2024 12:40

@Moodycoo thanks for a detailed answer I have screenshot it... @Rosiiee thanks to u aswell... I'm definitely Gona eat wait a while then take it... I wasn't given no instructions and even on the box it jus says have with a. Glass full of water nothing else .....

It didn't make me vomit but after a few days it gave me the absolute scours (sorry, but better to be prepared). I got through it by eating very bland food, not much fibre or dairy, and staying near a bathroom.
