I've got tonsil stones that are stuck

I've suffered with them for years but only get them occasionally

I usually just cough and dislodge them but I've had these for days

I can feel them in my throat. I can see them in the mirror. I'm worried they can be smelt on my breath.

I've tried pushing them out with a cotton bud. Then something harder which I shouldn't have done.

I then ordered a waterpik from amazon which arrived this morning but it's just making me splutter and gag everywhere. I can't see where I'm aiming and I'm sure I blasted them but they've not moved.
It's driving me nutty :(

Sorry posted too early.

Any suggestions to get them to dislodge?

Put some tunes on and have a good sing along, louder the better. Or gargling

BlueTongueSkink · 21/01/2024 11:18

I feel your pain, OP. Be careful with the water flosser though. I tried using mine on a tonsil stone recently and aimed wrong, I got a bruise inside my mouth and had a really sore throat for a couple of days! Didn't work on the stones either so good luck getting yours out.

Lots of gargling with hot salt water should soften them up a bit. Do it several times a day for a few days then try again with the cotton bud.

Hagbard · 21/01/2024 11:48

*and, not or gargling

CarolHath · 21/01/2024 11:54

Another vote for gargling with hot salty water to soften them. I was able to dislodge mine immediately afterwards with a gentle squeeze using a cotton bud. Haven't had one in years. Thoroughly enjoyed getting them out 😳

I do usually! They always just pop out but these just won't budge.

DH keeps trying to kiss me and doesn't get why I won't. I've never told him I get them as he saw a video on the once and was throughly grossed out 😂😭

When I got one I didnt know what it was and as I’d eaten fish that day, thought id got a bone stuck! Spoke to my GP who sent me to hospital. Waited 3 hours, saw an ENT consultant who told me what it actually was. Cue massive embarrassment and apologies. He took it out with a suction thingy and told me to gargle daily with salt water to prevent them returning.
Ca you get someone else to get it out?

Oh dear 😂

I could only ask DH and he doesn't know I get them. He would probably throw up if he tried 😂 he was gagging at a video of them once

My ds gets them a lot and they used to be extremely hard to remove . We started to get some olive oil on a cotton bud and applied to the area, on a few occasions he even drank 5-10 ml of oil and it coated his throat, after a week of doing this he then was able to use a cotton bud to remove them really easily

Purpleandredandyellow · 21/01/2024 15:21

I use the end of a (sterilised) blackhead remover, you know the little loop - it kind of lets you get in and under them.

SteamingTangerine · 21/01/2024 15:32

I don't understand why you're all using cotton buds to remove them, I've always got mine out with my fingers? Or sometimes I can dislodge them by doing a hoicking, heaving action with my throat muscles. Attractive.

Dryshampoofordays · 21/01/2024 15:54

I use a 1ml syringe of water to flush it to the surface and one of those blackhead remover tools to scoop it out. I use my phone light to help me see what I’m doing. They’re so gross, I wish there was a cure!

This is exactly how I usually get them out. The HOICK 😂 but these are stubborn little bastards

I can't reach mine with my fingers. Is this one of those things, like piano playing, that my stubby fingers have doomed me to failure in?

StinkyLittleBastrads · 21/01/2024 17:07

They just won't come out.
Which is weird because usually by the time I can FEEL them they're ready to come out.

I can feel these so bad but I've poked them with about 5 different things and am just hurting my throat now.

Gonna keep gargling and try to ignore them
