Colonoscopy prep

Hello
I’m having a colonoscopy next week, I’ve had a couple in the past so I know about the procedure but just had a few questions if anyone can help please? I noticed this time on my prep sheet that I’m to take my last moviprep on the morning of my appointment, 5am for a morning colonoscopy. In the past I’ve always taken moviprep the day before my appointment and don’t feel comfortable with this, has anyone had this and if you don’t mind me asking how was the morning prep? I have called the hospital to double check and they confirmed that the prep has changed since my last one and to do it as instructed with one the night before and one the morning of, I guess I’m curious as to the change and if anyone has experienced this? Also the prep food has changed, I could have chocolate and white rice last time in the days before but this time it’s in the no list. Obviously I have to do it as they say but I was more comfortable with the old way of both drinks the night before and keen to hear from others. Thank :)

Hiya I had a colonoscopy a few months ago. Yes the morning one is usual. I couldn't keep it down for some reason but the colon was fine/clear despite this.
I watched some YouTube videos to help get my head around it.
It's unpleasant but necessary I think

Lowironrightfedup · 19/01/2024 15:33

I have the same - and was also worried about that!

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 15:43

Thank you both! I’ve had three and always had x2 moviprep the day before so I was a bit unsure but there must be a good reason for it, unless they just enjoy torturing us ;)
did you take yours at the exact time on the prep sheet rum? If you don’t mind me asking, had things erm settled when you left for the hospital?
good luck with yours too low, is it your first?

Can you still have Bovril? I'm due one shortly x

Lowironrightfedup · 19/01/2024 15:48

It is my first and I am really scared! Of the prep, the journey and the actual procedure.

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 15:50

Yes it’s on my list, clear soup and bovril. They used to do a chicken bovril but I couldn’t find it today, must be discontinued. Also says clear jelly which I’m thinking lemon/lime?

@Lowironrightfedup
im so sorry you’re scared, the fear is horrible I know, it’s one of those things that sounds so much worse than it is, ok it’s not the best day out you will have but it’s not nearly as bad as I thought. It’s over ten years since my last one but feel free to ask anything (however gross!). Do you know which prep you are doing and are you having sedation? It’s a personal choice I’ve had with and without but I preferred the sedation. Mine is next sat btw so happy to go through it together if you need a handhold x

Thank you - that’s so kind! I have plenvu, first dose is 3pm then second at 4am. My anxiety is through the roof about it all at the moment.

I think it’s nothing red or purple that could stain your bowel

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 16:19

I haven’t had that one but I think it’s considered one of the better ones to take, not as much to drink. I know with the moviprep you can add some juice (not red) to help with taste so maybe double check if you can with that. Make sure you drink lots of water before during and after the prep, boring but it does help

I got lucozade and squash to help wash it down! Am just focusing on Sunday evening when it will all be over. Thank you for your advice and support, what a way to spend a weekend!!

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 16:30

I know right! I don’t do well when I’m hungry as I usually eat little and often so that’s the hardest thing for me! You will be hungry after but don’t eat anything too heavy, try to stick to toast etc to start and build up or you can get cramps, similar to when recovering from a virus

I cut fibre rich foods 4 days b4

I often treat myself to a cheeky maccy ds after mine

Lowironrightfedup · 19/01/2024 17:00

@worldwidetravel2017 thank you! That’s reassuring about the journey..!! I am worried about being sick as I hate throwing up. Good advice on the toast as well, feel like I have been living on soup and toast recently.

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 17:00

@worldwidetravel2017
haha I did it once and regretted it but I had a milkshake and drank it like I’d been locked in a cage for week!
I’m going to do the diet for a few extra days like you did too, out of interest did you have white rice and chocolate on your ok list? It was on mine last time but not this time, my list is so limited this time but looking online other regions have more varied options, I wonder if it depends on where you live?

Plenvu and Moviprep are very similar in ingredients and made by the same company. Plenvu is 1L and moviprep is 2L overall. You mix both with squash that is not red/blackcurrent or lemonade or similar.
Also make it up earlier and put it in the fridge as it will remove some of the taste, so through a straw and you can do a sip of prep then some of a drink you like to make it all taste better.

Depending on the time of the appointment is what schedule you get for the preps so the later in the day ones they will want you to have a prep in the morning rather than both the night before.

If you have a look at the leaflet in the prep or online at emc, you can find the list the manufacturer allows.
Different hospitals do edit the list for themselves due to certain experiences or preferences of the doctor. But I would follow the list from the manufacturer

JoyeuxNarwhal · 19/01/2024 17:02

I decided to follow the instructions for the morning appointment recently because I didn't think I'd be able to go to bed that late and then get up that early to follow the afternoon prep instructions (appointment was 2pm). I got told off! Nurse at check in said if it wasn't done per the instructions there was a chance they wouldn't be able to see properly so would have to stop and I'd have to come back at another point.

In my mind because there was no food/nothing other than water or lemonade going in after I'd had the prep stuff it should still be clear. Bowels don't quite work like that though and there was a fair bit of bile stuff showing greeny/brown throughout. Prep still graded as good though and they were able to see what they needed to.

The 2 people I was waiting with had done their prep as instructed (last dose 6am) and had felt fine to come to the hospital.

Good luck Flowers

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 17:03

@AHobbyaweek Thank you, I think that’s what made me question as I have a 9.30am app and have to do my second moviprep at 5am the same day, feels so wrong but hospital have aid it’s correct. I’ve always done both the day before for a morning appointment

OP posts:
Mynewnameis · 19/01/2024 17:05

The prep wasn't nice but I wasn't sick. I think I did take one in the morning. Each hospital seems to have different advice of what you can and can't eat.

AHobbyaweek · 19/01/2024 17:07

Then that is the hospital deciding they like that method rather than it changing as it hasn't changed officially from the manufacturer for the last 6 years at least.
The manufacturers instructions are you can take both the day before.

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 17:07

@AHobbyaweek @JoyeuxNarwhal
thanks both! I will check that, great advice.
that’s perhaps why it’s changed then, maybe they were seeing too many who were not clear enough and changed things.

Lizzieregina · 19/01/2024 17:08

@@Happylittlekitty I’ve always done my MoviPrep both doses the evening before for an 8am procedure. And I always did my second prep at 8pm so I could go asleep and not be having to poop after I went to bed!

I know lots of people who have to get up early and do the second one in the morning. I wouldn’t be a fan of that!

Happylittlekitty · 19/01/2024 17:13

@Lizzieregina
yes exactly the same! I’m
not a fan either I was always glad to get that bit out of the way in one day but if that’s what they want then il do it and ask for a medal on the way out :)
