Migraine and dreams

Just the other day, I thought to myself that it was weird I hadn’t had a dream in months. Or not one I could remember. I haven’t been sleeping well so that might be a reason.

I’ve had very vivid dreams in the past, but they seem to go in cycles. So I’ll dream a lot over a certain period of time, and then the dreams suddenly stop - or I don’t recall them.

I had a ferocious 24-hr migraine last week and since then I’ve dreamt every night. Could the two be connected? It’s as if the migraine has altered my brain pathways somehow and freed its dreaming potential…

I also have strange dreams / thoughts during migraine attacks. I’m not sleeping (pain too intense) but dozing - and I get these really random runaway thoughts that give me the strangest feeling. Almost like I’m dreaming while being aware of it. Hard to describe, but it’s not at all pleasant and I dread it happening.

Has anyone else experienced something similar??

Yes, I think I have a similar experience.

I used to have very vivid dreams as a child but as I got older I seemed to stop or never remember them. The only time I remembered dreams in my 20s when I was pregnant. Sometimes I would remember snippets but it was rare.

For the past 7 months I've been having headaches/migraines almost every day but about 5 months ago I started having vivid dreams again. It's at the point now where I can easily recall these dreams and often they are so detailed and realistic sometimes I genuinely can't tell if it was a dream or a memory.

I use the daydreams as a way to distract myself and cope with the pain and then I think I do actually fall alseep but I just don't realise it. I'm not affected by them like you are though.

Goodness, headaches/migraines everyday sounds horrendous @Phantosmia Do you know what's going on? Must be awful for you.

How interesting that you've started dreaming again too... though it must be weird/confusing when you're not sure if you're remembering a dream or an actual event!

So much that's not understood about migraines... and everyone's experience of them seems to be slightly different.

I also have always had periods of either very intense and often upsetting dreams or no dreams at all. I don't seem to get nice or normal dreams at all. Currently 1-2 migraines a month and I have noticed that I tend to dream more while I have them or for a while after
