Does this sound like IBS ??

I have always suffered from IBS type symptoms during my period, but over the last few months, these symptoms seem to be happening more often than not.

Basically, first thing in the morning, I have stomach cramps and have to go the loo about 3 times one after the other. Then it stops, but each time I eat something, my stomach starts making the most weird and loud noises, and is really bubbly and I have to go the loo again, i also feel queasy at the same time.

I am not 100% sure what is causing this, but i'm getting utterly sick of feeling like this ll of the time.

I am starting to worry about going out etc now, as I always wonder if I will suddennly need the loo.

IBS is not nice. You have to poop, then it feels like you need to poop again, gasy tummy aswell, can be painful. Diorhoea then constipated sometimes. Made worse by sress. an cause nausea. You should see your GP to get other things excluded first before this should be diagnosed.

Nicecupofwine · 17/03/2008 21:27

I suffer from IBS and it can be really painful. I find it is stress related (all be it just worring about small things). It was brought on by the builders a few years ago (they were a nightmare extending our house) and I have suffered ever since! If your diet is unchanged perhaps you are het up about something?

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 10:21

That is exactly what I get avenanap. It is made worse by stress too, even little things make it worse.

Last night was really bad, and I spent 4 hours running in and out of the toilet, I am exhausted. Can't get in to see a doctor today either, and my own doctor goes on holiday tomorow.

It is really starting to get me down. I am due to go on a hen weekend in Spain at the end of March and i'm dreading it because of this.

Anyone got anymore advice on this ?

Do you have diarrhoea with it?
If so do you get blood or mucus mixed in with it? (sorry to be revolting)

It could be IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) if it is not clearing up (ie Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease)

I would get to the doc and get some tests organised.

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 10:58

Diarrhoea yes, alot more than constipation. No blood in it but mucus yes.

I just feel so drained and my stomach will not bloody shut up, it is constantly gurgling and rumbling. I feel hungry but am too scared to eat anything.

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 10:58

Sorry, I meant, I get diarrhoea more than the constipation which is quite rare.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 18/03/2008 11:00

ok if you have mucus you need to get checked out

Is there any history of Crohn's or colitis in your family

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 11:02

My aunt has Crohns, and both of my parents suffer with IBS, my dad suffers quite badly with it.

I will try again tommorow to get into see a doctor, any doctor.

I wa so tired and exhausted last night that I even considered sleeping sitting on the toilet

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 18/03/2008 11:23

Right well I would think that is a distinct possibility then My great-aunt had it and I have it, they say there is a strong hereditary element to it.

There is a big difference between IBS and IBD (as I am sure you know).

You really do need referring for some tests. Pls feel free to email me countessdrac at gmail dot com if you need any advice if it does turn out to be Crohn's. It is not easy to diagnose so it could be some time.

www.nacc.org.uk is very helpful too

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 11:27

Thank you CD

I will definatly go to the doctors tommorow, even if I have to have an emergency appointment.

I'll let you know how I get on.

CountessDracula · 18/03/2008 11:32

No worries

Good luck

You can take immodium in the interim by the way

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 11:40

Yep, have just got my mum to get me some.

Should i take them even if I have been ok so far today ? My mum said take one anyway.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 18/03/2008 11:42

I would take them with you and use them if you really need them

You don't want to get constipated if it is crohn's as that can be v painful. Or if it is IBS

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 11:52

Ok, and thanks again.

OP posts:
CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 16:30

Me again, i'm really nervous about what to eat for dinner now.

So far today, I have only had toast, but I want something more than that for dinner. Would a jacket spud be ok, with philly cheese ?

It's annoying that part of this problem is stress and here I am getting extra stressed about it and probably making myself worse.

Calistaegg, I have a feeling that is what I will be told.

I enjoy lots of what is bad for me too, perhaps thats how i ended up here.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 18/03/2008 17:40

Well the problem is that what you should eat depends on what is wrong with you

I don't know about IBS but I assume it needs fibre

Whereas when I have a flare of Crohn's I avoid all fibre as it makes it worse.

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 17:42

Calister, do you take medication for it ? Do you have to take it all the time ?

OP posts:
CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 17:42

Fibre makes me worse I think tbh.

BlaDeBla · 18/03/2008 17:52

If you do turn out to have Crohns or UC you don't need to worry too much about your diet! I have UC and frankly it doesn't make a lot of difference what I eat. Alcohol isn't so good, but that's about it. I don't know much about IBS apart from that it's different!

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 17:54

Oh well, have just had a small jacket potatoe with a bit of philly cheese. Also had another immodium, as I cannot be up all night again, I am too exhausted as it is.
