How pushy to get iron infusion?

I had open surgery to remove a cyst from my liver in October. Recovery has been rough as expected. In a follow up appointment with the hospital they ran blood tests and my iron was 4.9 with 9% saturation which is extremely low. A few days before I had raised an econsult with my GP with symptoms of severe anemia. My GP wouldn’t touch me with a barge pole and told the hospital they should sort the iron infusion.
i waited a month and followed up with the hospital who confirmed they would arrange the iron infusion.
its been another two weeks and still nothing. I am so sick of having absolutely no energy I can’t even gently exercise as I feels like my heart is going to explode. Am I being realistic to have expected an appointment date by now? When would you chase again?

If you have waited so long, definitely call and check you have not fallen through the cracks.

In the mean time, you can always try and up your iron intake and absorbtion through dietary changes. I always suffered the symptoms of low iron, until I started to eat only meat meals. Many people don't realise that a 'balanced' meal of meat and vegatables means your body cant absorb the iron, because chemicals in the vegetables interfere with iron absorbtion.

And good luck chasing your infusion.

Thanks so much! When I was discharged the consultant told me to eat liver, which I forced down! I knew dairy stopped dairy absorption but had no idea veggies could do - thank you.

Push for the infusion but if you can in the meantime take an iron supplement. Diet alone will not be enough to improve severe as anemia.
