Tonsillitis

I've been ill for 2 days. Sore throat, cold shivers, hot shivers, zero energy. I've looked at my throat today and it looks like tonsillitis, I've had tonsillitis before and never felt this crap, could it be something more sinister?
I am awaiting a call back from GP but wondered if anyone here can help

COVID? My main symptoms were the worst sore throat ever and a dreadful headache

Ds 24yr had this at Christmas. Massive white spots on his tonsils, shivers, sweats and splitting headache. Out of hours gp was brilliant on the phone and prescribed a 10 day course of penicillin. It’s taken 5 days for ds to feel human again and he’s still not 100%

So, after being on hold for an hour at GP surgery and giving up, ringing iheart at 4 to be told no appointments, rang 111 who said they would call back within 2 hours (spoiler - they did not)
I rang again at 4am and they said someone would call me back, they did, and told me to make an appointment at the GP.
It's definitely tonsillitis, but should it really take over 24hrs to get antibiotics?
Once I saw the doc, he was lovely, very thorough - but getting to see one these days is nigh on impossible. How can people know they are going to be ill?
