Pain in right rib & shoulder

AJE131520 · 28/12/2023 19:55

Hi
the past couple of days I've been having pain in my right rib at the bottom and also my shoulder blade not unbearable pain just very dull usually worse after eating could this just be indigestion pain ? Wouldn't want to embarrass myself going to GP or walk in centre if it is just a bad case of indigestion
Any similar experiences :)

how long does it lasts? Could it be gallstones?

Elodie09 · 28/12/2023 20:13

I have no medical background but upper right quadrant pain can be gall stones. It is a really bad , gripping pain . My partner had pain like this for two years . It seemed as if no one was able to diagnose it , we googled it and asked if it could be the gall bladder when he was in A & E ?
He ended up in hospital for nearly two weeks. Gall bladder removed so please make sure you can get help to check out your symptoms. Murphy's test is a test for gallstones and obviously scans etc as necessary. Good luck, hope you are not in too much pain.

dontcallmelen · 28/12/2023 20:15

Hard to tell really, probably indigestion maybe try some otc meds could be trapped wind which can be painful, be inclined take some meds & if it didn’t shift make a GP appointment as could be gallbladder issues.

Eggsley · 28/12/2023 20:17

My first thought was gallstones?

My doctor helpfully informed me that I meet the criteria of the five 'f's for gallstones being likely - fat, forty, fertile, female and flatulent Blush - if any of those apply to you as well then it's worth going to see your GP - they may send you for a scan to check your gallbladder.

Eggsley · 28/12/2023 20:18

The above was after going to see him because I am having pains on my right side, underneath my ribs and up into my shoulder. Have got an ultrasound in late January.

AnnaMagnani · 28/12/2023 20:20

Gallstones. Absolutely textbook.

AJE131520 · 28/12/2023 20:33

Thanks for all the reply's i did google and that is what came up mostly gallbladder or liver pain it isn't unbearable like some people have described it being the pain has been lingering for 2 days now but more noticeable on the evening its uncomfortable in the rib and shoulder blade but also in the centre between both ribs which is making me thing indigestion but i will just give my gp. A call in the morning just to be on the safe side x

I have this but blood tests, CT and ultrasound haven't found anything. I fit all the fs for gallstones. Hope you get answers.

MummySS22 · 28/12/2023 23:11

I've got gallstones and this sounds.like.it. I don't fit the four Fs either for gallstones but here we are. You can get a niggling pain like you describe with gallstones. I often have a dull ache I'm my right rib and shoulder, it radiated to my back and this can last a few days of tenderness. I would query gallstones with GP.

Madeupballs · 28/12/2023 23:13

Also clay coloured poo.

AJE131520 · 29/12/2023 10:56

I will be making an appointment later today as it hasn't gone away also since waking up it feels as-if there is something stuck under my rib and pressure every time i breath in
thanks for reply's guys x

Try some milk thistle tincture. It flushes the liver and can help shift any small stones which could be irritating the Gaul bladder. It’s the only think that kept me pain free whilst I waited for surgery

MummySS22 · 29/12/2023 18:25

It may not get worse. Usually with severe gallbladder you get something called biliary colic and it's the worst pain ever.. worse than childbirth. You may have stones that are just moving around and making your gallbladder inflamed. I've had gallstones for 18 months and am still on a watch and wait approach. My doctor said if my symptoms haven't worsened then it's unlikely to get any worse. Fingers crossed for you.

ScarletPower · 30/12/2023 18:50

I had a gallbladder chock-stuffed with gallstones and only ever had 2 really bad attacks but most of the rest of the time I could feel what you described, an uncomfortable pressure around the rib area so it may never develop into full blown pain (and I hope for your sake it doesn't, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy) x

You could present at A and E as it’s worsening pain wise- could be bad enough for a surgical
admission but maybe not quite yet. Try 111?
Does the pain worsen on breathing in? If so then A and E and ask for an X-ray- it’s unusual but I had similar pain, more shoulder blade than rib based and it worsened massively over 3/4 days- chest X-ray showed a mass in my chest which was a tumour and it was impacting on my thoracic area as a whole due to the size. But I do think it’s far more likely to be gall bladder. Mine wasn’t impacted by eating or any food stuff and wasn’t eased at all by gaviscon etc. I was convinced it was pleurisy for some reason- maybe the stabby feeling on breathing…

MummySS22 · 02/01/2024 11:08

The fact you've got cold or chills could signal an infection. I would present to A & E. IF it is your gallbladder and it is infected it can cause you some serious issues if not treated promptly. Just present and say gallbladder is suspected and they can do LFT and amylase blood tests etc to check of there's something going on.

froufroulala · 02/01/2024 11:40

Not something I would normally suggest but I have Cirrhosis non alcoholic. I have all those symptoms plus.
They thought it was gallstones. Mention cirrhosis and get it checked it's important.
Good luck.

AJE131520 · 02/01/2024 21:30

Thankyou for your reply's
i will look into cirrhosis i haven't been to get checked as are roads are badly flooded but i will tomorrow if symptoms persist i just get so worried about wasting doctors time and as I'm not having a attack as such I've been nervous to go maybe the bloods will give some answers on friday aswell i will present to a&e tomrrow just to be on the safe side thanks all 😊

Go to A and E. I had this type of pain when I had blood clots in my lungs, along with pneumonia and pleurisy . ( I also had a rapid pulse and raised temperature). I went to A and E and was admitted and treated in hospital for a week.
