Pain in chest and back

Hello there

so I’m just recovering from a cold and chest infection. I’m feeling lots better, but I seem to have developed a pain in my chest and back.

It’s front centre, sort of on the bone between the breasts and directly opposite, on the spine at the top of my back.

It’s been here about 4 days.

It’s worse when I lay down at night.

I feel the pain more on breathing out rather than in and also when swallowing.

The pain is mild to moderate.

Is this normal? I am 43 and otherwise in good health.

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m going to try and get an appointment with the GP tomorrow, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t making me a slight bit anxious.

I had exactly the same pain. Mine was an irritated oesophagus. I didn’t have indigestion so I was surprised. I was prescribed something that reduced stomach acid which I had to take for 28 days. The pain went after a couple of days.

Do you think k you could have torn a muscle from coughing? I would go to the doctor as it could be a few things and I am sure could be easily diagnosed and sorted.

I certainly could have. A lot of my coughs were quite strained with this chest infection.
I am also getting a lot of acid heartburn at the moment, so that’s interesting too.
I don’t feel it’s urgent enough to commit to 24 hours in A & E, but I do hope I can get an appointment tomorrow. Not sure I fancy my chances though).
Thank you for your response. It’s quite reassuring to read others have had the e same.

Have a look at costocondritis... that spelling could be way off!!

It's an inflammation of the lining around the lungs, which can be caused by coughing and can cause sharp pain. I've had it in exactly the same place as you, and I had to sleep upright for a few nights.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you, I’ve just looked, and the places highlighted on the images are exactly where I have pain. I’m going to have a good read about this now.

Also, thank you for the well wishes.

Aldo concur that it could be reflux related if you suffer with it anyway.
