Blocked ear since covid

Susieblue18 · 18/12/2023 22:17

I had covid a few months ago and my ear has felt blocked since. Sometimes it seems to clear a bit but usually comes back. I don’t think it’s wax. Has anyone else had this and found a way to unblock it?

Yes I tried everything and finally what worked was boiling an egg, placing it in a sock, then laying down on my side and placing the egg on the affected ear. The gentle continuous heat changed the pressure in my ear, balancing it out.

Wouldn't a hot water bottle do exactly the same thing ?

Probably, yes! Not sure how much heat they put out, I've never used one. It needs to be as hot as possible without hurting you (hence the sock) and sustained for at least 10 minutes I think.

I found broncostop cleared ear congestion but i guess it depends what the issue is with your ear.

@flowerchild2000 I wasn't sure if the shell had some magical healing power!

Heat on earache always used to do the trick for me, so it's worth a go on a blocked ear.

Haha no it's just the heat.

I find that if I sneeze it sometimes clears my ear and I can hear really well for a minute or two then it goes back to normal. I get a feeling of fullness in the ear too . It's not wax because I've had my ears tested .

DoYouSmellCarrots · 18/12/2023 22:41

Yes I had the same after covid for a couple of months. I'd say it unblocked in the summer when I was better hydrated.

5thCommandment · 18/12/2023 22:50

Go and get your ear syringed - they'll suck it all out and clear it for like £20.

Tanfastic · 18/12/2023 22:56

It will prob be a blocked eustacion tube rather than wax. I get this now and again due to a deviated septum and drainage issues.

What works for me is steaming over a bowl of hot water as often as you can over several days. It's a pain but it does eventually clear it.

I have covid at the minute and it's really affected my ears too but luckily the nose blowing is helping clear any fluid behind my ear. The popping and squeaking coming from my ears is ridiculous though.

Heat worked for me too. But the wet variety - I literally laid in the hottest bath I could bear day after day with my ears under water. Also letting warm water get in my ears when I was in the shower. The wax eventually loosened but it took a while. Otex helped too.

Pinocolada · 18/12/2023 23:02

I had this after covid. I was prescribed steroid nose spray and antihistamines which helped. I also used an otovent. After about 18 months of suffering it just cleared by itself.

They have stopped syringing now. It's microsuction costing around £100 in Belfast, not offered Doctors

FestiveGrinch · 19/12/2023 09:24

It’s blocked Eustachian tubes, I had this for about 2 years and it was miserable. I had my ears syringed which helped me hear better but didn’t clear the muffled effect. Eventually it just cleared by itself but if it happens again I will try anything to clear my sinuses and improve drainage now I know what the cause is and if I get a cold I sleep propped up as lying down makes it worse for me.

nether · 19/12/2023 09:33

I had blocked ears after what I suppose must have been a cold (I tested 3 times for covid, all negative, but I still wonder if they were false). Never had that symptom before with any other cold!

Antihistamines (of the sort sold for hayfever) may help

Newgirls · 19/12/2023 09:36

Have you tried a few drops of olbas oil with boiling water poured over and then steam? It helps to clear for a while. I do it every day

CornishGem1975 · 19/12/2023 09:36

Go and get microsuction, it worked so well for me, I was sure it wasn't wax either but they put a camera in there and it was pretty stuffed up.

You can pay and it's about £60 for both ears I think but I went to my GP, he did a referral to Specsavers and I had it done within 24 hours, that was about 2 months ago.

LB007 · 02/01/2024 13:17

Yes I have it right now I've had it for four weeks it's worse in the morning before I eat and drink my ear is constantly popping but no pain
