Just looking for some re assurance ( and hope )
10 years ago I had a root canal. It was absolutely fine till this year when a x ray showed some possible area of infection . The root canal tooth has always always had an issue with food being stuck .
In October the gum swelled and I got a abscess ( thankfully fairly pain free )
After antibiotics I was offered a extraction or a re root canal (which they felt had every chance of success so I went for that )
The tooth is 5 the from front in the right and the cost of an implant isn't something I think we can do so wanted to try and save it .
I had the root canal re done on the 30th November and a temp crown fitted. All went well but when they re X-ray at the end they found that a bit of the old root canal had escaped ( I assume into my gum) the dentist was confident this would get sorted and my body should heal around it but prescribed antibiotics for an emergency and I'm re booked for first week of Jan for another x ray. He then also talked me through worst case which is a referral to a hospital to re try the root canal or a dreaded extraction.
So I'm 2 weeks post and the gum is grumbling! Not much but I'm aware of it maybe 20% of my day. Pain isn't bad maybe a 1or 2 out of 10 and a couple paracetamol and it's gone but everything I read online says intense pain after a root canal means it's failed but I can't find anything about grumbling . I absolutely don't have intense pain. I'm also not sure if maybe I should take the antibiotics as advice was if it was really swollen etc
I am terrified of issues over Christmas and also of extraction because I've read so many awful stories of dry socket.
So I guess my question is is a bit of gum grumbling normal 2 weeks after a re root canal? Should I try and see my dentist this week before Christmas just in case .. although I guess all he could do would X-ray and confirm if I need the extraction or do I try and stop thinking about it ( my anxiety is making me obsess )
Advice so greatly welcomed
