Can I get my heart checked privately?

My mum died of heart failure, my brother had a malformed heart valve that was replaced, our friend has just had a heart attack caused by a totally blocked vessel.

Can I get my & my husbands hearts throughly checked? Do I just ring a private hospital and ask?
I just feel at 55 I'd quite like to pre empt problems if possible,

Yes just phone someone like BUPA and ask what sort of checks they offer and the cost

I think you'd need a referral. I'd email or write to your gp, explain the family history and ask for a private referral letter. In the meantime just make an appointment with the private hospital - don't blame you!

BUPA and other health care providers offer wellness assessments of different levels so you can get a wellwoman assessment which will cover heart, lungs etc plus gynae side too.

Not cheap looking at about £200 minimum.

If you're over 50 (I think) you should be invited for a health check by your GP surgery, for free. Might be worth checking when you will be invited by contacting your GP surgery

You don't need a referral - I have had several private health consultations - I just rang and made an appointment.

Yes. I was having some chest pain and saw a cardiologist privately and had lots of tests done. Very reassuring as my mum had heart failure.

I’d be really interested to hear how you get on, same situation here, mum, gran and great gran have died of heart issues, brother had a stent quite young, first cousin has had a heart op… we always used to think bad hearts ran down the female line but it’s looking more widespread in this generation.

If you/anyone has the money, AFAIK you can get any test inc heat. Then get the medical reort that comes with the check to your gp if any concerns

Even the best-known NHS hospitals for heart/lung problems have private clinics running in London. A friend once paid thousands to get his checked

Good luck..
