Ear lobes rejecting earrings. Help!

I first had my ears pierced at 14 many, maaannny years ago. They were pierced for so long that I could leave the earrings out or in as I pleased with no ill effects.

A couple of years ago they started getting hot and swollen, one side in particular, so after trying going without and sterilising the earrings I gave up and left them alone. One side would be fine while I could only get the other earring in halfway.

Just recently I tried and succeeded for the halfway ear lobe to burn and swell. The fine lobe started to get a little warm. I took the earrings out and my lobes are flat and fine after 48 hrs.

What do I need to do to make them earring friendly again as I miss earrings?

What earrings were you trying? Nickel allergies are quite common and nickel is in most cheap earrings. Can you get earrings in? If you can I’d go with solid gold and treat them as new piercings so saline spray twice a day and don’t take them out for a month. If you’re struggling to get them in then I’d go to piercing place, get them redone with a needle and have hypoallergenic studs put in (they’ll probably use something like medical grade titanium). Then again treat as a new piercing in terms of aftercare.

I have a nickel allergy and can only wear gold jewellery - I don't wear much jewellery for that reason!

Try dipping the posts in hydrocortisone cream before inserting. It works for me.

Unless you have an actual metal allergy, or signs of infection, you need to leave the earrings in and not touch them and give them time to heal. I'm on day 3 of re-opening an old hole, the swelling has gone and the soreness is much reduced.
