Absolute agony with throat

HealthConcerns · 10/12/2023 23:22

I’m in agony. My throat is so red and swollen, my tonsils are almost touching and covered in white spots. Whenever I swallow it feels like I’m swallowing razor blades. My temp is now 39.2 and I can't stop shivering. I keep dribbling as it hurts to swallow and my ears keep clicking and my head is starting to hurt.

Other than paracetamol and throat sweets does any one have any suggestions on what to do for some relief tonight? I can't take ibuprofen as it's not recommended with another medication I'm taking. I'm absolutely miserable.

I'll be contacting my GP tomorrow, though we can only do this online so hopefully they think this warrants an appointment.

Thanks in advance

Oh no that's awful! A bit too late to get throat numbing spray. Can you gargle with aspirin? Or weirdly, mouthwash can also help in my experience! I also alternate between hot and cold drinks as seemed to soothe a bit ... Do see a GP this sounds horrible, Hope you feel better soon x

Can you not call 111? Sounds like you
need antibiotics.

My little boy was like this yesterday. I rang 111, I didn’t want to wait until Monday to see someone As his school has an outbreak of Scarlet Fever and Strep Throat. I rang about 11am, they said someone will call me back within 24 hours. A Dr rang me back at 5pm, we had a video call, where I held a torch and my phone to his mouth and she looked down his throat, she looked for rashes on his body etc, watched me feel his glands. She prescribed antibiotics which I got by 6pm, now he’s had 6 doses and has perked up.

I was impressed with the process, he was so unwell yesterday with a temp of 39.8 and I assumed we’d be struggling at a weekend to see someone. I don’t have advice (apart from loads of fluid, paracetamol, rest, sleep) but I’d definitely recommend 111 on a weekend rather than waiting till Monday.

You definitely need antibiotics. Keep up with the paracetamol. You could try gargling with salt water or aspirin as pp said.
if symptoms get worse, phone 111. Strep throat is not to be taken lightly. Hope you feel better soon!

A good piece of advice I had from a GP was to gargle soluble aspirin in warm water. Don’t swallow just gargle. Very soothing.

Thank you all.

I'm still feeling terrible today. Did a 111 call last night but still haven't heard from them 🙄 have spoken to the GP at the surgery and have a prescription for antibiotics and have been told to go back if I'm no better by Wednesday as I should be feeling better by then.

Hope you’re feeling better op. The pain from tonsillitis is like. Nothing else.

HealthConcerns · 11/12/2023 21:08

@Haggisfish3 thank you. Still feeling rotten, my temp has shot up again this evening. I'm meant to be working a 12 hour shift tomorrow too but no way can I do that so will end up having to phone in sick again (had to today too for a 10 hour shift) so feel guilty for my colleagues who will have to pick up the slack.

My 9 year old is now saying her throat hurts too and she's a bit croaky so looks like she has it too poor girl, last week of school for Christmas and lots of fun planned
