Has anyone had pancreatitis and can explain how it progressed?

I've had abdominal pain for 2 days. Heavy, bloated feeling around belly button. It's very sore and sensitive but not excruciating. Today I have bruising where the pain is - on belly button (which Google says is Cullen sign) and my symptoms most closely match pancreatitis.

111 say not urgent. Speak to GP tomorrow or Tuesday but I still feel a bit worried.

So I'm wondering - anyone who has had pancreatitis can you tell me how the pain developed?

I had pancreatitis due to gallstones. The pain was higher up more like under my breastbone. It came on suddenly and was a constant pain like a full ache. Very bloated and very sore. To be honest if the pain is bad I would go to A & E. Most cases if they are mild will actually get better with fasting and fluids which was my case. But If you have a risk factor for pancreatitis like me with my gallstones then I would go to A & E or ring 111 back and ask for an out of hours app. The last thing you want is it getting worse and you will go jaundice if it gets serious. A & E can do a pancreatitis enzyme test which will show if there is inflammation. If the pain isn't severe, your not chucking your guts up and you are not turning yellow then I would say you will b okay to wait until tomorrow.

Thank you for replying.

No I'm not in agony just very uncomfortable. I feel like I've got a heavy stone in my stomach. It's belly button and below not high though. And central.

Honestly - the stomach pain I'd have given a few more days. It's the bruise on my stomach that worried me more than anything.

I had pancreatitis due to gallstones too, and it also precipitated jaundice. I was admitted via A&E, so the presentation was presumably an emergency. It was very, very painful and particularly as horrible backache. I am not one to fuss about health, but I think it has to be take fairly seriously.

If you’ve been prodding, you could have bruised yourself?

I mean if you are concerned you should push for an out of hours or go to A & E. Cullen sign is a rare sign to be honest.

I haven't been prodding. My tummy is sore to rub so I definitely couldn't have touched it hard enough to bruise. Thanks for reply though.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll just see what happens. If I don't feel worse as the day goes on then I'll just wait to see the gp.

I had pancreatitis caused by gallstones. It was agony and I was very unwell and was in hospital for about a week.

I don't remember having pain in my lower abdomen. It started like a gall stone attack but just got worse and worse.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/12/2023 13:33

I had severe pancreatitis and my pain was much higher in my breastbone area. Certainly nothing around my belly button / stomach at all.

Unicornpoop11 · 10/01/2024 21:42

I was diagnosed with pancreatitis in September 2021. I was 28 at the time but I’d had this pain on and off since I was 11. I spent so much time in and out of hospital as a teenager/young adult but I was always told my scans came back fine and it was stress causing the pain.

fast forward to September 2021 and I got the pain again, my urine was also Ribena coloured (thought it was blood) so I called my GP and they told me to do a urine sample. Called me a few hours later and just said I was dehydrated and probably had a bug.

About 8 hours later I woke up with excruciating stomach ache, felt like I was having a heart attack and someone was twisting a knife in my stomach. Went to A&E and they took blood tests and confirmed pancreatitis within the hour.

I was admitted and had to fast for 7 days, I also got the bruising on my stomach on the right hand side. (Greys and turner they called it) so it can happen with pancreatitis

I was constantly quizzed on how much I drank and don’t think they believed me when I said I drank very little (we had an 8 month old at the time) I was in HDU for ten days and after many scans they did an ERCP (camera) and found I had sludge in my bile duct. They now think that all the years I suffered as a teen/young adult were stones in my bile duct and not gallbladder.

sending love x
