Pneumonia / bronchitis

Hi all,

3 weeks ago this Saturday I got a fever, muscle aches, painful joints and pain in upper back (couldn’t get out of bed for two days) then came the awful crunchy cough along with Bibasilar crackles that sounds like I have rice crispies crackling and popping each time I breath or even open my mouth!

It was confirmed I had an infection in my lungs, left one worse! Took Steroids and doxy, didn’t make a different apart from ending my fever after 4 days, Dr a week later confirmed it was still on left lung so gave me 500mg of amoxicillin 3 times a day, I’ve finished the course and still feel breathless and still have Bibasilar crackles. I know the cough can last up to 6 weeks but surely the crackles and bubbling etc is associated with infection and should be gone? Just to note I can feel mucus but it never comes up.

I haven’t had anything last so long so I’m unsure how long recovery will be? Has anyone had experience? The cold weather certainly doesn’t help as everytime I’m outside my coughing and breathing is worse!

🙏🤞❄️
x

How are you getting on with this? I’m currently having the same problem except I think I’m on more antibiotics.

thegreylady · 10/12/2023 07:31

I was in hospital with pneumonia and discharged exactly a week ago. My treatment in hospital was exactly what you describe. The antibiotics were iv at first and they sent me home with amoxicillin. I am still very tired and weak but the worst of the cough has subsided. It is my right lung that still has some wheezes especially if I lie down. I have finished all the tablets now. I have pains in my right shoulder which are helped by paracetamol and ibuprofen . The worst thing for me was that I became very confused and unable to use words normally. I needed oxygen, my potassium levels were too low and it was a horrible experience. I am hoping it will steadily improve now but will contact GP if it isn’t right by tomorrow.

I’ve been low potassium on iv antibiotics too! taking potassium tablets in hospital. are you feeling better now then? I’m home on coamoxyclav and clarithromycin tablets I’m 37 and the doctors keep saying I’m too young for pneumonia. Do you mind me asking how old you are? X

thegreylady · 10/12/2023 11:31

I am 79! You are young. I had the vaccine years ago but this is my second go. I have to go back to hospital for another chest X-ray in January so trying not to overdo it till after that. I want to get through to Christmas reasonably well. I was told to take bananas every day to boost potassium levels. I really struggled to take the tablets though they were better with orange squash xx

thegreylady · 10/12/2023 11:32

I have been home for a week now.

Misscbu17 · 10/12/2023 12:29

Cough isn’t as horrendous but it’s still present and the popping candy sounds are still present which is the main worry!

I have an x ray booked in for Tuesday to see what’s going on 🙏

This sounds awful I’m sorry! Wishing you a speedy recovery, although everything I’m told is that it takes a long time.

glad you are under the care of the drs and hospital to manage it! Fingers crossed for you 🙏

Misscbu17 · 10/12/2023 12:33

You are not too young! That’s ridiculous, anyone can get it. And you could have have bronchitis that turned into pneumonia.

dr and research tells me upper and lower respiratory infections are everywhere at the moment x

Glad your cough is improving I’m getting the popping candy noise but mostly at night when lying down it’s very unnerving noise I was worried I had burst a lung coughing and it was air escaping the other day 🤣

Blinky21 · 10/12/2023 22:07

I had this for 9 weeks, antibiotics did nothing, I just had to wait it out in the end, spent a day in hospital but was told it was viral

Misscbu17 · 12/12/2023 10:21

Did you have the popping candy sounds when breathing 9 weeks in?

to top it off I now have awful tonsillitis so now on antibiotics for that! The dr also listened to my lungs and I still have crackles on left lung but I need to wait for X-ray and saliva results. I’m getting worried now x

I've had mine for nearly 6 weeks, I'm booking another appointment tomorrow (I did have antibiotics)
Have a cold so that's not helping.
From what I hear a lot of people have been having the same.

How are you getting on did you have another X-ray and did they say if the crackling popping is normal at this stage?

PToosher · 14/12/2023 00:10

I had bacterial pneumonia in my right lung in July 2022. I was off work for a month.
It took until nearly the end of the year for me to feel relatively fully recovered but I still feel like I lost fitness that I have struggled to regain.

Misscbu17 · 14/12/2023 00:40

Hi, still coughing and crackling when I breathe! Not got results from xray or sputum test yet but dr can still hear fine crackles in bottom left lung ;-(

OP you need to quote people when you're replying to them, otherwise your thread doesn't make any sense.

Misscbu17 · 14/12/2023 09:08

@TheShellBeach oh I didn’t realise - I thought replying on the actual message did that! I did wonder why it looked the way it did 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
PToosher · 14/12/2023 09:29

I had crackling in my lung.
The bacterial infection was in my stomach too so I had gastroenteritis symptoms initially, severe stomach pain and pain in my side. Then the pain in my side became excruciating and the doctor said it was pneumonia so I was admitted to hospital and was in there for 5 days.
I was discharged only when they mixed up my blood test with someone else's and it looked like my white cell count was in the normal range. In fact it was high for the next 2 weeks.

Edited

Oh dear are you still on antibiotics? I’m two and a half weeks in to being unwell, I’ve been on the antibiotics for a week and a half and still on antibiotics. I can feel the crackles just wonder when that should go?

Misscbu17 · 14/12/2023 10:28

@Worriedmamma19 I am now week for and still popping candy - crackles when I breath! Concerned now but have heard it can last a long time so 2 weeks is normal

Hi there. It's because the REPLY button doesn't do anything.
There have been a lot of threads complaining to MNHQ about it - not your fault at all.

Anyway, are you any better today? I'm sorry you've been so unwell.
