Any Drs here? Severe Gastritis from Dexamethasone injections. Can I take Esomeprazole?

I'm midway through 12 days of daily 4mg Dexamethasone intramuscular injections and they have given me severe gastritis. I have lots of 40mg esomeprazole here as home as I suffer with Gastritis often, but I have no idea can take them with the Dex?

Can you ask a pharmacist? At least you know you are getting reliable information from a professional - anyone could claim to be a doctor online.

Yes, that's a good idea. I was hoping to be able to a PPI tonight. But I can wait until tomorrow when I can see a pharmacist. I've been trying to call the Orthopedic surgeon who prescribed it but he's closed for the day.

I'm a pharmacist OP and yes longer courses of steroids like dexamethasone should be prescribed with PPIs like esomeprazole. There are no interactions between dexamethasone and esomeprazole-I have linked the dexamethasone injection patient information leaflet and if you look at the section that states 'other medicines and dexamethasone injection' you will see that there are no safety issues with taking both of these medicines together.
Just to confirm you aren't prescribed any other PPIs like omeprazole or lansoprazole? If not then I would take esomeprazole to reduce the gastrointestinal side effects.

Thankyou so much @pharmachameleon and for the leaflet. The only PPI I take is esomeprazole, I can't tolerate the others you mentioned. I have boxes of 40mg esomeprazole as I haven't need it for months, until now!

All steroids have the common side effect of gastrointestinal discomfort which can lead to a stomach ulcer in more serious cases. Therefore for many patients on steroids like dexamethasone we co-prescribe PPIs for the duration of the steroid course. Very common to use both drugs together. Hope esomeprazole gives you some comfort tonight and you can speak to a doctor tomorrow.
