Nerve Pain (I think)

Every now and again I get a very sharp pain in the outside area of left my ankle. Like an electric shock pain. It's been on and off for a while and hasn't impacted too much but it's starting to get worse. I'm at the point now where it's waking me up at night.

I find myself holding my ankle all the time for fear of the pain happening again. I'm guessing the anxiety is making it worse. I think it's probably a trapped nerve?

Anyone else had this and have any advice?

Sounds like sciatica which is quite common in the ankles

Thanks for the response. Never considered that tbh as assumed sciatica was always in the back and legs! I'll look into it 😃.

I’ve had it and not felt it in the back at all, just down the outside of my leg and into my ankle. The nerve pain I’ve had has felt very sharp like a shock/ burning but suppose it could be something else too. Are you able to self refer to physio

We have private health care through work so I think I could do it that way. I'll take a look. Sounds ridiculous but it always feels worse in the days before my period. Could be that I'm overthinking that bit though as I definitely get more anxious then in general.

@letstrythatagain thats maybe positive that it might not be sciatica then as that’s a total pain (no pun intended). Great if you have private healthcare sometimes nice to get a diagnosis even for reassurance and knowing how to manage it

Thank you. Really appreciate you responding. The pain when it comes is unbearable although only lasts seconds. Makes me jump every time!

I have this in the outside of my foot. Have had for around 3 years, previously sprained ankle. I've had amitriptyline, physio, custom insoles, nerve conduction studies and ultrasound with no diagnosis or success. When pain comes it's unexpected and extremely sharp like electric shock, makes you jolt. I'm utterly sick of it. Wondering if it's tendonitis irritating the nerve, or connected to tight calf muscles. No pain anywhere else, can have a good few weeks with only minor pain and then out of blue starts up bad again. If I knew a trigger would help..

It's so frustrating isn't it. I feel your pain. Literally. When it came it took my breath away with how sharp it is but no doctor seemed to know what was going on.
