Really painful breast

Yesterday my left breast became sore, not horrendous just kind of noticed it was there (if that makes sense). No lumps or redness or anything like that, but it does feel a little warm to touch.
Today it's quite swollen and the nipple area is driving me insane, the slightest touch and I want to cry. I'm 50 and menopausal/post menopausal (not had a period for 16 months now).

I'm guessing it's a hormonal thing and don't want to rush off to the doctors, but not sure If I need to. I'm certainly not thinking of anything sinister!

Just wondering if anyone has anything like this before?

I'd report to your GP via econsult and see what they say.

DingDongMerrilyWithPie · 27/11/2023 20:03

By that I mean definitely report it - it might be nothing but it's best to be sure.

I'm peri menopausal, and I get this for a day or two at a time quite regularly, only on one side, sometimes just feeling warm and heavy other times the slightest touch is agony. My doctor dismissed it as hormonal, but if you're concerned do go and get yourself checked if only to put your mind at rest. 💐

Oopsididitagaintomorrow · 27/11/2023 20:42

Thank you @kwetu that's exactly what it's like, on the one side and feels hot and heavy, very tender to touch and throbbing...it almost feels a bit like mastitis from vague memories x

I'm your age and had this, with a very itchy nipple on the inside. Obviously you need to get yours checked, but I had a mammogram, and examination and thankfully everything was fine. Hope you get a similarly positive result

Thank you @Snowdropsarelovely - I'm going to ring my GP in the morning, probably get an appointment for 3 weeks time or something lol x

Any dimpling or orange-peel like texture?

It's most likely hormonal as PP describe, but definitely get it checked.

Not to panic you, but there is a rare form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer which can cause pain/swelling. I only mention it as not everyone is aware of those symptoms (even some GPs) and I wouldn't want you to feel like you're not taken seriously if you're worried.

Wishing you the best

That's why I mentioned to get it checked out. I had dimpling (due to a benign cyst as it turned out) but they were asking about inflammatory breast cancer symptoms including night sweats. I think it's always best to have unusual breast symptoms checked out. The breast clinic would rather see you.

Hi all, I went to the doctors yesterday. Had a good examination and it turns out I have an abscess under the nipple. It came out good and proper last night, sooooo painful.

On antibiotics for a week, another appointment made for next week to check its cleared up/clearing up. If not then a trip to see surgeons to get it sorted. The difference just being on antibiotics since yesterday afternoon is massive, so I think I'll be OK 😁

Oops I'm glad you're getting it sorted out. You poor thing! Pleased it appears to be on the mend. So glad it's happened now and not during the festive season. Get well soon 💐
