Hi just seeing if anyone is in same position or has been
Basically I’ve been having bowel issues since I had my son jan 2022 I stayed having constipation lose bowels with blood mucus urgency to go stomach cramps ect
So doctor said I needed to do calprotectin test and that came back at 157 repeated it again 2 months later and that came back at 185
Anyway all my symptoms disappeared and bowels went back to normal so doctor said may have just been one of those things 🤦🏻‍♀️
But 3 weeks ago the mucus the urgency the blood all started again so I’m at new doctors again now and I called them and explained and they said I needed to do another Calprotectin test and this time it’s came back at 655!! I’m so worried incase it’s cancer I’m single mum to 3 children and I keep having sleepless nights thinking something is seriously wrong with my helath
I have been sent for a colonoscopy
X

It sounds more like inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis than cancer. DH had similar symptoms and it was Crohn's colitis - which is now well controlled and he is totally well. Fingers crossed for you.

Shauna2866 · 24/11/2023 15:25

@cathyandclaire I really hope it’s IBD rather than cancer I’ve only just turned 30 so worried thank you for reassurance x

My calprotectin was quite a lot higher than that (can’t remember exactly, think it was just over 1000) and I got diagnosed with Crohn’s disease after a colonoscopy. It’s a horrible wait but you’ll be in the best place and they’ll take care of you x

MirandaWest · 24/11/2023 15:33

It sounds similar to my DS who was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis a few months ago.

Shauna2866 · 24/11/2023 15:37

This has been going on for 2 years nearly now so I really just want to no what’s going on it’s the not known for me I hate it well I think everybody does
but this is the highest they’ve ever been before x

@Shauna2866 It sounds like a form of colitis etc. But I am not a doctor. My advice would be to go for the colonoscopy ( which is not as bad as it sounds - the drinks you have to have beforehand are the worst ) and then you can get a proper diagnosis. I had a colonoscopy it was fine and the doctor said - not cancer you have a form of colitis which we can treat

I would not panic just right now and I wish you well

Shauna2866 · 24/11/2023 19:09

@BasiliskStare thank you x just say freaking out thinking the worst I’ll speak with my Gp Monday again x

When is your colonoscopy ?

Shauna2866 · 25/11/2023 22:58

@BasiliskStare I’m not sure doctor said she has sent me for one that was yesterday after she called me to say they are extremely elevated they have been elevated in the past but only 157/185 this is the highest it’s been and symptoms went and now come back again hopefully I’ve been fast tracked I’m talking to them again Monday x

My calprotectin was over 600, I had a colonoscopy which came back normal apart from a poylp which was removed. Couple of months later they did another calprotectin and it ca.e back at 15! Gastro have asked for a small bowel MRI now as I still have symptoms. Yours sounds like it could be colitis or crohns which can be treated x

Shauna2866 · 26/11/2023 07:37

@GG1986 yeah that’s what my doctor is thinking IBD hopefully I’ll get a colonoscopy very soon so I know it’s the not known and I’m a worrier more so cos I have 3 small children and I lost my mum 2 years ago to cancer but she had lung cancer and lost my dad 4 years ago I panic a lot x

puppymagic · 26/11/2023 07:41

My brother had 4000 when diagnosed with IBD. Hopefully the colonoscopy is soon and puts your mind at rest.

Babyenroute · 26/11/2023 08:09

Did you have any oral antibiotics after having your son by any chance? I had VERY similar issues to what you describe a few years ago and the only thing I can pinpoint it to is a course of amoxycillan. My symptoms were exactly yours and test results similar too. They suspected colitis but biopsy they took while doing a colonoscopy all clear so ended up referring me to a gastro doctor who tried me on low fodmap diet (didn't help). Ultimately it improved with varied diet and probiotics so I think the antibiotics disrupted my microboime

theconfidenceofwho · 26/11/2023 11:36

I had exactly the same Op & after colonoscopy, was told it's diverticular disease (which is totally ok apparently & nothing for me to worry about / change etc). Symptoms come & go but thats just the way.

caringcarer · 26/11/2023 11:44

Try to keep calm. I know it must be hard with 3 DC and your parents no passed away. Hopefully it will be treatable.

scaredofff · 26/11/2023 11:49

Hopefully the referral doesn't take too long
Please try to stay calm until you have to worry or you will make yourself so unwell. It may be something totally treatable

Shauna2866 · 26/11/2023 15:35

@caringcarer thank you I am trying to forget about it my kids keep me busy it’s the not known and I get scared to think it is the C word 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ve only just turned 30!! My doctor said he is thinking it’s more of IBD but need to have the colonoscopy to see first x

OP posts:
theconfidenceofwho · 26/11/2023 16:05

I was the same Shauna especially as googling the symptoms only brings back the C word!

Yes, had calprotectin test and that was elevated hence the need for the colonoscopy. I'd never heard of diverticular disease but that's what came back and apparently it's fine and nothing to worry about! The consultant also said something about my pelvic floor being weak (I've had 3 DCs vaginally) so my rectum was pressing against my vagina - but I honestly didn't follow that and again he said not to worry as that's quite common, so I've ignored that bit!

Apparently something 50% of the population have diverticular disease but a lot don't even know as they have no symptoms.

I'm sure you'll be totally fine but I do understand the worry & I paid to go private as couldn't bear to wait for an appt.

Shauna2866 · 26/11/2023 19:24

@theconfidenceofwho bet you was relieved! i can afford to go private so if it’s gonna be along wait then think I will go private myself too
I’ve had 3 c sections but had them all very close had 3 in 2.5 years 🤦🏻‍♀️
just turned 30! And I feel like a 80 year women with all my problems I’m having x

Hi did you find out what it was ?
I had my son in may 2023 i have 3 children under 5.
I had a normal stool sample back in summer (can’t remember the month) but few weeks ago I had another stool done through private and my calprotectin was 270 :/ I have to do another one in two weeks time. My doctor says possible bug or even IBD.
I get days where I don’t go, if I eat spicy food I get diarrhoea next morning etc then sometimes I get constipated.
I did have mild anemia deficiency while pregnant but bloods tests recently were fine.
travelled to Egypt 3 weeks ago so kept wondering if it was to do with.
I have health anxiety and also used doctor google and completely freaked myself out!

Caththegreat · 19/07/2024 14:34

It's not nice for people without 3 kids either

Caththegreat · 19/07/2024 14:35
