Broken nose advice?

DS (2) head butted me in the night and my nose is likely broken. He is fine, not a scratch.

Copious amounts of blood that took about 20 mins to stop. Bruising, swelling and still too painful to touch 4 days later.

My question is now, I've got this awful headache I can't get rid of which is just getting worse. Is this normal with a broken nose?

The NHS website says it should heal by itself in about 3 weeks but seek medical advice if severe headache and blurred vision. My eyes hurt but vision ok.

Not sure whether I need to see maybe a pharmacist or something or what they can even do? It's still very painful but that could be totally normal with this type of injury.

What do I need to do? Just wait? Is it normal? I feel like this much pain isn't but not sure there's anything much can be done about it.

If the NHS website says seek medical advice, then that’s what you need to do. GP, or 111.

There's no blurred vision though so I'm thinking not indicative of a complication just a headache on it's own. I'll be passing a pharmacy later so may just pop in and see what they say.

I'd be surprised if a 2 year old could inflict so much damage that would warrant a hospital visit, especially if he himself hasn't been injured. Personally, I'd give it 24-48 hours to settle down and then assess.

I've had two broken noses in my time and yes, I had a headache. You've taken a blow to the head, it makes sense that you've been jarred, possibly strained a neck muscle etc. Unless you suspect something really very serious that may require a scan of some sort, or maybe eye socket/cheekbone damage, I don't think the A&E would offer much advice, as there's not much they do for a broken nose.

I would get medical advice, even if it's just to make sure your nose is healing straight. Mine was broken years ago and now has a deviated septum - a slight lean to the left which I'm really self conscious about.

As a nurse op I recommend you get this checked out at your local a&e

AutumnLea · 24/11/2023 14:45

Not possible to go to a&e as I can't sit down there for hours and hours with DS. He is suspected ASD and would just not cope.

There's a lump that wasn't there before but like I said it's the headache getting worse over the last 4 days I'm worried about.

I'll try pharmacy as first stop and then 111 if need be.

I know it sound ridiculous but he's extremely strong for a 2 year old. HCPs have commented on that before.
