Why can’t I eat in the evenings?

I have had horrible bowel and stomach issues for years (currently awaiting a colonoscopy before anyone asks. Last had one 5 years ago which was clear). I have intolerances to a lot of foods, mainly fruit and veg. Nightshades except for potatoes are murderous and I can’t cope with onions, garlic, leeks etc. it’s upsetting because I used to be a real foodie and loved highly flavoured spicy foods. My diet now has to be very bland or the bloating, pain, nausea and diarrhoea are unbearable.

Even more inconveniently, over the past year I’ve become unable to eat a meal in the evening. Breakfast and lunch are fine, even really large meals at those times, but I cannot eat a meal past around 3pm and I cannot eat AT ALL except for a couple of small mouthfuls of food after 5pm - e.g. a few crisps, or a Babybel, or a couple of squares of chocolate. If I eat anything more than that my stomach bloats enormously and painfully, food repeats on my for hours, I feel nauseous for hours, I often have diarrhoea and I can’t sleep until my tummy bloat goes down which can often be a good 6 hours after eating. Does anyone know why this happens? It causes so many problems as I can’t eat out in the evenings or have an evening meal with my family. If I try then I have no evening to speak of as I spent the entire time feeling too unwell to move from bed.

SIBO?

Sorry don't know much about it but have a google. It seems to fit your symptoms

No. I did ask about this recently but was fobbed off and told that they don’t test for it as standard and that I didn’t need testing.

No. I’m awaiting a colonoscopy but my GP didn’t think I needed a gastroscopy.

Have you had a colonoscopy b4 ?

The preparation - / drinking the solution before is in manys opinion worse than the procedure
I have another colonoscopy next week...

Had one this year already where polyps were removed and biopsied. Biopsies were okay.

My list of stuff 2 buy in prep 4 colonoscopy again -

Lemon squash ( you must avoid dark red squash )
Straws ( mixture avoids more of your tongue then- it is vile & if you get told to use moviprep - quantity is a lot - ngl)
White bread
Cornflakes
Eggs
Plain crackers
Plan yoghurt with no lumps / no fruit
Banana

I go low fibre 5 days before - no cereal - no fruit etc really - it makes your chances of clearer bowel / less hastle..

They do grade your preparation - last time i got excellent...

I was persistent and pushed 4 gastroscopy in summer - we hadnt found a reason 4 my low feretin
And eventually they were then checking stomach 4 a bleed

Ive since learnt that iron deficiency anemia can be linked to serious liver issues
I have a high density area on liver / in liver - private mri very soon - whilst wait 4 NHS one - results are faster with private - could be benign but equally could be cancer

I have a letter asking them to look urgently @ upper gi - i assume as parts of that are v near these liver abnormalities - if cancer is there // if its spread.

Ct scan is good 4 showing some stuff up b4 mri if needed - cant remember if you said if you had a ct scan

Re gastroscopy - feeling full more / not hungry etc - id push 4 one
I slept through my first gastroscopy

AceofPentacles · 22/11/2023 07:13

I'm the same. Are you hypermobile? As I believe that reduced motility can be exacerbated by connective tissue issues. Also, SIBO was suspected by my consultant but the NHS doesn't test for it.

Mine definitely got worse in peri. Not only can I not eat dinner any more but I am completely lactose intolerant and cant eat anything greasy, spicy or garlicky. So basically hardly anything nice. Sympathies.

Boredofmyguts · 22/11/2023 07:27

I agree with others that you need an endoscopy for feelings of fullness and bloating and maybe an abdo ultrasound.

Ikeameatballlunch · 22/11/2023 13:02

This was me at the start of peri.

But my mum can't either and it seems all my older relatives now.

I was on hrt and that did help to a point. I've come off and seem to be maintaining a good balance but I'm eating a lot of veg. The whole 30 plants a week thing.

I can't really eat meat anymore. Can eat fish and sometimes chicken breast. Or too much oily stuff.

Ikeameatballlunch · 22/11/2023 13:03

Also hypermobile.

I had issues with FODMAPs and histamine.
