Please help me with pile! (Embarrassed!!)

So I think I have piles... ahhh cringing even typing that!
I have allll the symptoms of an internal pile on the nhs website. It escalated over the weekend. I started using germoloid suppositories on Sunday and it's been an instant releif. Literally no issue. One in the AM and one in the OM as stated in the packet.

I've just been to the toilet for a number 2 for the first time since and I've noticed a little sting in original area.

My question is..... how long do piles/haemorrhoids last?
How long should I continue with the sepositories for?
Any advice?

Going to hide under my pillow now in embarrassment!

You need Anusol with HC (hydrocortisone). You can get suppositories and a cream - the germoloids ones don't work at all for me. I'm mid flare up of a persistent bugger, and it's taken 2 weeks to get to the point where it's bearable. You can get stronger stuff on prescription but I've never needed it, touch wood.

You have my sympathy, it really is miserable.

Thank you!

From your experience... how long do they last and how long do you need to treat them for?

How long will a pilelast?
How long is a piece of string?
It will vary from person to person and the size (!) of the pile. Might be a week or 2 weeks +. Don’t stop using the remedy too soon.

You might have to try several over the counter (OTC) remedies but when you find one which helps, always keep some in the 1st aid cabinet. Also, keep your bottom clean. Try to wash after every poo with gentle soap.
Piles are miserable so try not to get constipated. They seem to hit at unexpected times. Odd little blighters.

You are not the only person in the world that's had a pile. Your being slightly dramatic with the embarrassment Confused

Aww well I'm sorry that you feel that I'm being dramatic!
But thanks for the really unhelpful/patronising comment 🙃

Thank you! I think I was worried about using the product for too long/ short. When using it I feel absolutely fine but obviously I won't know when it's gone completely so I was unsure if there was general guidance about it!
I'll maybe just use the packet and then see how I get on. I think that's 2 weeks worth of treatment.

It can help to use something like Dulcoease or fybogel to avoid constipation while your piles are irritated. Mine always stems from bouts of constipation (thanks to a medication I'm on).

I would agree with the PP who said to carry on using the cream/suppositories for a good week after you feel relief to be on the safe side. Flare ups vary - sometimes it can be a few days, other weeks. I find if it's an internal pile that's made its way out, that is usually a good 3 to 4 weeks... the joys.

Seaoftroubles · 16/11/2023 20:59

OP, Piles are miserable, but very, very common. If you use the suppositories with hydrocortisone in them then use as per instructions for 2 weeks, and then if its still troublesome, continue with the HC free cream or suppositories for the next week, or until you feel completely comfortable. Warm baths help, and OTC pain relief if it still feels tender. Also make sure you dont get constipated as this can bring piles down. Above all try not to worry!
