Growing Pains

Ds (4) has been having bad pains in his calfs. Dr checked for injuries etc, and ds has said he hasn't banged them either.

Dr. suggested growing pains. Has anyone elses dc suffered with them? I can't remember ever having them, but dh can. Calpol is helping, but it is so hard knowing he is in pain, and there is nothing medically wrong iykwim.

How else can we help him. It does not happen every night, more when he has been active in school.

My dd (10) had a phase a few weeks ago, - like you got checked by dr, who said probably growing pains, and to give Nurofen rather than calpol as it is more anti-inflammatory, which should help more. She even suggested giving her some preventatively on days when she had sports etc.
Thankfully for now it seems to have passed, but fully expect it to return at some point!

ds1 who is almost 4, has been having the same on and off for the last year, especially like your ds on particularly active days.

Unfortunately it seems there is little you can do, I too give Calpol or Nurofen, I'm not sure it physically helps but mentally he feels better. I also give them a good rub.

There is an old wives tale that if you have an enamel bath (we did at the time) you should stand them in the bath barefoot and it somehow 'drains' the pain away Suffice to say I didn't think yanking him out of bed to stand him in an empty bath in the middle of the night was really going to stop his little legs from hurting so have no idea if it is true or not

We do massage before bed sometimes for DD - that seems to help.
