Colonoscopy & Breastfeeding

Hi, I’ve had a positive FIT test so been referred on the 2 week wait for a colonoscopy. I have a 9m old who breastfeeds a lot during the day and night. I’m so worried about the meds transferring to my milk. Has anyone been through this? I’m also terrified of what they may find 😢

@worldwidetravel2017 no glandular fever as far as I know, but couldn’t swear to it! Quite possibly could have when younger and not noticed / put it down as some other illness.
I hadn’t heard that before about the link, that is interesting.

The family history one will be relevant for you, and yes the sessile serrated I found that in my own research too.

Are you on monitoring now every few years?

They want to check site of removal again this yr - expecting / awaiting appt in post

Had another qfit that is now negative :)

Sadly had an early miscarriage in sept

Had a ct scan last month - awaiting / chasing results

Wanting to try & conceive again though & drs told me not to wait as im 36 & nearer 37

Obv if we did concieve again - id have another colonoscopy after giving birth

CatchHimDerry · 13/11/2023 10:59

@worldwidetravel2017 similar to me!

TTC no.2 and on 2nd early loss in a row sadly.

Sorry for your loss as well :(

Im skipping this month then maybe try again.

If it happens again I’ll go see if there’s anything going on, but my doc said same no need to wait and next camera can be after birth as she’s happy enough that it wont magically regrow or a new one pop up and become dangerous in that time

I didn’t have a FIT test but I’m happy as I no longer have any blood visible, whereas it was every single BM before.

Hope it all goes well for you!

Ah i see

So sorry to hear of your losses too

I didnt have blood visible
Was the qfit test that found it..

I had mega low feretin ( iron issues)

You need good feretin 4 conception & pregnancy - - so might be worthwhile getting feretin checked

Also the miscarriage & vit D link - fixed my feretin definitely, b12 deficiency & vit d deficiency b4 started trying
Concieved 2nd cycle trying
But then early miscarriage
Apparently with me being over 35 - its 1 in 2 chance of early miscarriage first try

Sending all the luck

Im not a medic at all

But could be chrons , or bowel polyps or piles or diverticulitis et

Some peoples scores are in the 100s etc ...

My bet with a score of under 100 is nothing too bad
Fingers n toes crossed

CatchHimDerry · 13/11/2023 11:52

I don’t know what my score was as I didn’t have FIT, or what the number relates to… but I’m betting mine would have been HIGH 😂 the blood was a lot, all the time.

And it wasn’t sinister, so fingers crossed all will be fine OP!

@worldwidetravel2017 i don’t seem to have an issue conceiving as such.
My DS was 1st cycle, the two losses immediately fell pregnant also one after the other.
The last two just didn’t stick.

I did wonder whether there’s any link to breastfeeding perhaps messing with hormones.
But there’s apparently no link from my research.

I haven’t yet checked thyroid or vitamins, iron etc. that’s my next port of call!

Thanks for the info, all the luck to you too!

worldwidetravel2017 · 13/11/2023 11:59

Tommys baby charity avoided me to check thyroid after early miscarriage but it was fine - think was just unlucky

Don't be surprised if your HCP says you have to not bf OP. Dr's In general know very little about bf and even less about drugs in bf so default to no.

Contact the bfn's drugs and bf network. They're all qualified pharmacists and will be able to tell you if the drugs are safe (very very few aren't BTW, and those that aren't are things like chemo) but more importantly why they're safe.

Good luck and hopefully it's something nice and easy to sort

They've told me not to feed for 24 hours 🙄

Who has?

MrsMCtobe · 13/11/2023 15:21

The NHS booking line but I’m to call the clinic to discuss it further

The booking line are administrators

Greybeardy · 13/11/2023 16:09

You could ask to be done on an anaesthetist list rather than a seditionist list. Benzos (used commonly for sedation by non-anaesthetists) should be used cautiously if you’re still feeding. Given that anaesthetists look after breastfeeding women day in day out they’ll probably be more confident sedating for this.

MrsMCtobe · 13/11/2023 16:10

They have just sent the full info pack and it actually states it’s fine to feed! They really need to update the booking agents.

So Moviprep failed!! I need to try again, this time they’ve given me 10 Senna tablets and 2 sachets of citramag to take over 2 days?! Has anyone taken these while breastfeeding please? Thank you so much
