Amitriptyline 10mg side effects

I have been taking Citalopram 20mg in the morning for some years to help with anxiety and they help a lot, but recently I have also been prescribed Amitriptyline 10mg taken at night to help with my lower stomach pain.
I decided to stop the citalopram a couple of days ago just incase it was not a good idea to be on two different ant-depressants.
The Amitriptyline do seem to be helping, but today for the first time I woke up and feel very agitated, just wonder if it could be caused by this medication and if so, what should I do.
Any thoughts please.

Get advice from a pharmacist. You shouldn’t be stopping medication without advice.
Hope you feel better soon!

That'll be the citalopram withdrawal most likely. Did you speak to your gp about stopping it?

AnnaMagnani · 07/11/2023 15:29

Stopping the citalopram without being advised to do so was a bad idea.

The amitriptyline is not an antidepressant dose so now you basically aren't on an antidepressant.

You are most likely missing it.

I've taken citalopram in the past and I agree, it'll be the withdrawal from that which is making you feel agitated. It's a bastard to come off of, bluntly.

It gave me raging anxiety. I had it for back pain. It made me twitchy, restless, heart racing...awful awful feeling. I was in a panic. Never took it against back pain was better!

I take amitriptylene 10mg and don't have any side effects.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/11/2023 15:49

I think it would be the citalopram withdrawal You shouldn't have stopped Suddenly
They are safely taken alongside each other( I'm on a different AD but also take Amitryptiline 10mg for pain
Any concerns, ask your pharmacist or study the enclosed leaflet

I was on amitriptylene for a year after each of my kids were born. I did find there to be side effects such as being permanently irritated/quick to anger. Also felt like my heart was working harder.. did feel a bit groggy during the day.
They did massively help my insomnia caused by pnd tho and they don't get into breastmilk so I just put up with the side effects.

haribosmarties · 07/11/2023 16:26

@AnnaMagnani amitriptylene is used as an antidepressant but you would need a higher dose than 10mg. It tends not to be used much now days as an antidepressant because its very dangerous in overdose as opposed to ssris. But it does work as an antidepressant it's not just used for nerve pain

Jimboy · 07/11/2023 16:27

Thanks for all of your replies, will be back on citalopram, good to hear that I can take them both.

@haribosmarties not sure why you have @ me when my post was pointing out that amitriptyline needs to be a higher dose to be an antidepressant.

I didn't need the lecture, thanks.
