Bleeding and the pill

Has anyone else who has started the combined contraceptive pill kept bleeding throughout their cycle. I started on day 1 of my period and am still bleeding on day 11. All very light but definitley there. I have checked and am not pregnant! I've never had a problem with it before. Thanks and sorry if TMI.

Some women have a lot of break through bleeding on the combined pill. It may be beacause the balance of hormones in the one you take doesn't suppress your womb lining enough.

Of course there are other reasons why you may be experiencing bleeding which aren't pill-related, the most common being infection and problems on the cervix (e.g. polyps, erosions).

Which pill are you taking and for how long? Have you taken any antibiotics or had sickness/diarrhoea recently?

I'm taking cilest and only started this cycle. Otherwise completely well and not taking any medicines. I did take this before I had my kids but no problems then

If its your first pack, I wouldn't be too concerned. Give it 3 packs to see if you settle back into it.

I assume your periods and previous smears have all been normal previously???

I took Cilest for a while and had loads of light bleeding (IYSWIM!) - as in, at really odd times during the cycle. GP wasn't interested; said it could take a few months to settle - I gave up after 3

Sorry I can't be more positive.

Thanks. Really could do without a 4th baby so need to persevere until DH's snip confirmed OK! Never had problems with cilest before but have had all normal smears and periods in between 5 years of what seems like permanent pregnancy/small babies! This time of taking it though have really bad skin, feeling sick as well as continuous spotting. Roll on 4 months time...

when i was on a high dosage of oestrogen pill i had the same thing. i'd go and ask the doctor and see what they say. i had to go down to a lower dosage pill which still worked but didn't interupt my periods do much and worked alot better with me

it is normal though when you first go on them though and can take a while to settle and then things should be fine.

if you're worried though, i'd check with the doctor or the nurse, they're normally pretty good with things like that
