WTF Is wrong with me?!

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/11/2023 19:28

I am baffled... I do have a lot of health problems (dodgy heart, diabetes, Ehlers Danlos...)..

Relevant stuff:

Three weeks on antibiotics - penicillin - something else - penicillin. The last round of penicillin made me itch all over. Ugh.

Dental infection sorted by round three though. Did give me thrush, fixed with the pessary.

Then three days after I finished the AB's, I had a day of horrific gut pain, spasmodic colic (if I were a horse). Back pain, no poo, whatever it was the pain moved from below ribs and down in to the pelvic area over the course of around 12 hours. It hurt so much I had to stop work early and I work from home, answering live chat messages... so pain has to be pretty awful for me to do that.

The following day I felt mostly fine, though drinking water would result in some minor abdominal discomfort/spasms but nothing like the previous days pain.

I did a huge green shit. Lovely.

Felt a lot better.

Getting up to go to bed last night however, as soon as I moved from sofa back to wheelchair, I had uncontrollable shivering, touch sensitive, couldn't really work out if I felt hot or cold. Went to bed and lay there shivering and shaking for hours. I had a lot of shoulder and neck pain as I could not relax, everything was tensed up.

Woke up feeling fairly ok, quite hot... but more a 'toasty warm' not a 'sweaty' hot.

Came down and started to feel pretty awful, nauseous, flu-ey, BG at 11.6 when I checked and at this point I'd eaten nothing (was around 6 at bedtime the previous night) hot but not shivery, then too hot, then too hot and sweaty. At one point I had the door open and sat here in a Tshirt, room at 20 which for me is normally too cold!

Am on a work shift now and really struggling feeling sicky, super tired, stiff .. but the hot sweats have gone thank fuck.

So what the fucks going on, have I just knackered everything with the antibiotics and upset all of my internal workings?! I suspect a bad bout of gastroparesis but it's never been like this before (feeling full and bloated yet hungry is the norm and the answer is to just not eat for a few days).

I don't think i have got the flu, can't check temp as someone stuck the thermometer up a dogs arse and im not sharing that!

I would call 111

Gcsunnyside23 · 04/11/2023 20:10

I think green poo means infection of some sort. If you're still not feeling well of see your gp

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/11/2023 20:24

I thought it meant undigested bile, it's not green now (and it was otherwise a cracking good poo according to the Bristol Stool chart!)... I am more concerned about the lingering 'unhappy innards' and weird temperature/shivering/lack of regulating my own temp thing.

If it gets bad again (current status 'a bit meh blah' rather than dying!) I'll ring 111 and see if i can speak to an out of hours GP. I have to be a lot closer to death than this go to go A&E though, they can't meet 90% of my needs there and will probably finish me off, they had a good go last time (completely missed a hypo and i was in a room with no call bell, and no wheelchair and a bed i couldn't get out of by myself!!)

Happened again - not a coincidence I think that it happened as food moved from stomach to intestines (same as last nights bout)...

Exactly the same pattern, several hours of uncontrollable shaking/shivering, raging thirst... and then a bit of calm, then getting hotter and hotter and into hot sweaty mess.

111 OOH GP wasn't a lot of help as if gastric delay/emptying and solid food is triggering an autonomic dysregulation its not really their area. Suggested liquid diet until I can speak to my own gp and get referred appropriately.

Writing it all down helped me see the pattern though, and this does all fit with my other conditions. No more pikelets for me!

This is how I feel when I take the same antibiotics that u did. Except mine comes on really quickly and stays till I finish them. Not having them again as I feel like death on them. But told by the gp he wouldn’t put down I was allergic even though I obviously was.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/11/2023 05:27

Yes I do think that three weeks of antibiotics is key here - whilst I have bouts of gastroparesis (common in diabetes and Ehlers Danlos) it's never had this effect before!

And if im not digesting properly then likely most of my daily medications are also not working properly (bg has been all over the place too) so that certainly won't help.

Ho hum, I shall plod on trying to remain alive!

Some antibiotics still give side effects weeks after stopping (I was warned about this with one I've had over the last couple of years but can't remember which one, sorry).

Hope you're feeling better soon @WiddlinDiddlin Flowers

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/11/2023 18:35

Mmm... no repeat of the shivering horrors. However felt awful this morning, sofa snoozed until that passed and then into the hot sweats (soaked through shirt and bra).

Have only had a small bottle of plain kefir. BG 8.3 on waking (several units higher than normal) and 10.7 2 hours post kefir (and I had 25 units of insulin for that!).

This needs to bog off asap, ive got four shifts in a row starting wednesday, i got incredibly lucky on saturday that my 8 hour shift coincided with feeling vaguely functional!

Did a covid test just in case, negative.

Try a pro biotic?

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/11/2023 18:42

Mmm that was why i went for kefir. I also have protein works shakes available but need to check the fibre content. I am suspicious that digesting fibre is a trigger...

MigGirl · 05/11/2023 18:42

I was just going to say try a probiotic. A good capsule one from the pharmacy.

3 weeks of antibiotics is going to have really killed a ot of your gut flora.

Ebtsaqt · 05/11/2023 18:49

Sounds a bit like when i had mastitis
Could it be kidney or uti especially as not peeing overnight?

Rosamond35 · 05/11/2023 19:59

Get yourself to the docs!

My mum once had C Diff after receiving IV antibiotics. She was proper rough with it.Could be that and can be treated with a further round of antibiotics (ones specifically for that infection).

Don't take anything else til you've seen someone and got a proper diagnosis!

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/11/2023 04:51

I haven't taken anything in the first place... antibiotics were done over a week ago now.

I am peeing, no issue there, not a UTI, can't see how it would be mastitis either. I've not actually had a temperature at any point today (don't know about yesterday, didn't have a thermometer). Not pooing particularly, but then in the last two days I have consumed sugar free squash, kefir and the pikelets yesterday, and a spoon of smooth peanut butter today. So theres unlikely to be much to poo there!

OOH gp suggested ondansetron for nausea which i already have on hand - ill get a GP appointment when they open, though who knows when someone will actually talk to me!

DH was like that when he had cholangitis.

Loubelle70 · 06/11/2023 06:31

Look.up vasal vagal nerve issues and diarrhoea etc. I think you have that. I have it and sweat, pain, dizzy etc

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/11/2023 15:37

Hmm.. vagus nerve worth checking out, I have some bony spurs and stenosis in my cervical spine (I mean really at this point I need taking out and shooting!)... if somethings squished/trapped there - and my neck IS sore and tense and horrid... that certainly won't be helping me.

No joy on GP appt today, try again tomorrow. Grr.

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/11/2023 04:15

Actually felt hungry... ate solid food (not much)... and right on stomach emptying into gut, violent shakes again.

OP posts:
WiddlinDiddlin · 07/11/2023 17:06

Finally spoke to a GP at my practice and you submit written details first so i got the full timeline in.

He said it sounded exactly as I thought, the slow stomach emptying/shite gut motility is pissing off the autonomic systems/vagus nerve (10/10 to that poster) resulting in these faux chills/fevers that have no corresponding actual temp.

He's convinced a high fibre diet and metaclopromide will fix... I am wary of insoluble fibre (in any signficiant quantity, say a bowl of bran flakes, or a bean soup) it really does a number on me... so will try for soluble fibre.

Any hints as to soluble fibre, easy to digest, low in carb, fat, sugar and protein, please tell as that seems to be all the food categories really! Food that is not... food...

Still, happy he's pretty certain the lack of any raised or lowered temp means I don't have a galloping infection anywhere despite going through patches each day where it feels like I do... and gathering up the last bit of smug I have about me in my pathetic weakened state to enjoy the 'i was right' feeling (gotta take my kicks where I can!)... and the drugs are something new to try!
