Eating unrefrigerated eggs

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 15:32

Recently moved to the US. we picked up some eggs about 3 days ago (taken from the fridge) and I forgot to put them back in the fridge when I got home. I just had scrambled eggs. What are the chances I’ll be sick?

@ComfyBoobs Who mentioned it being common knowledge but you? Don’t put words in my mouth. I asked a question; if you know the answer then reply, if you don’t (as you didn’t) then scroll on.

Well the assumption of knowledge is implicit in the fact that you didn’t explain it in your OP. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That was largely left to other more helpful Mumsnetters who had to clarify things on your behalf.

And in the meantime you were berating people for not giving relevant answers.

dementedpixie · 04/11/2023 16:18

I am in the UK and know that US eggs are washed and should be kept in the fridge. The OP is perfectly entitled to ask the question and not get snarky answers back

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 16:18

@Change2banon I asked will I be sick to know what the risk is of me getting salmonella…regardless if I know or not, I wanted to ask a question based on previous experiences with this situation. Like you said, if I’ll be sick I’ll be sick, but there’s nothing wrong with me asking what the chances of that happening are.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2023 16:20

That context was completely absent and would have avoided lots of confusion.

There wasn't 'lots of confusion' (leastwise not from anyone who can read), other posters clarified about US eggs within the first few posts/couple of minutes.

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 16:20

@dementedpixie Thank you 😊 some users comment for the sake of it and want to start a debate. I seriously don’t get it. Why come on a forum to try and belittle others??

@ErrolTheDragon Thank you!! This is what I’m trying to say. I don’t get how much clearer I could make it.

I’m not trying to belittle you! You have got very worked up at various points about people not answering your OP to your liking. Could easily have been avoided if you were clearer. 😊

GettingSickOfYourNonsense · 04/11/2023 16:21

I've never put eggs in the 'fridge. They go in a cupboard.

BitofaStramash · 04/11/2023 16:21

@Redlarge

Not American eggs. They are bleached and need to be refrigerated

They are washed in soap. But not bleached. That would poison consumers.

www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/09/11/336330502/why-the-u-s-chills-its-eggs-and-most-of-the-world-doesnt

The colour of the egg is down to the breed of hen.

PS we aren't meant to discuss egg colour says OP

Buffypaws · 04/11/2023 16:22

The OP was clear she is in the US. As a British person I am aware of the lion mark etc so grasped from the OP that being in the US is relevant is it does not have the same safety schemes in place and salmonella could be a risk.

As the eggs were cooked and didn’t smell off it’s probably fine… you’d be unlucky to get ill I’d have thought.

Well OP you certainly don’t seem sick

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 15:40

Forget the reason why the eggs are white…my God. I’m asking about if I’ll be sick. I don’t care why the eggs are white.

Why is a simple question so difficult to answer with some people.

What I’m asking is, what are the chances I will be sick from eating previously refrigerated eggs that were not refrigerated for 3 days?

Edited

If you ask people who are not in the US you will not get the replies you would if you ask people who live in the same place, and therefore are more likely to know what will happen with unrefrigerated eggs of any colour if they are not kept in the fridge.

The previous suggestion to ask on a US forum was valid. And you could even Google it, there's an idea.

Being snippy with people who try to help will not get you anywhere, just ask somewhere else if you don't like the replies, maybe.

Why the hell do they wash eggs in US?

www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/09/11/336330502/why-the-u-s-chills-its-eggs-and-most-of-the-world-doesnt

This article summarises it.

Buffypaws · 04/11/2023 16:23

OP just ignore them. You can’t do anything about other people’s lack of comprehension. Other people have understood your point.

SparklingLime · 04/11/2023 16:24

You are incredibly rude, OP. Could that possibly indicate that you are unwell due to the eggs? I know that UTIs can cause confusion and a temporary unpleasant change in personality. Any, preferably American, doctors around?

White eggs vs brown eggs are not due to bleaching. There isn't a material difference like with white or brown bread.

Certain breeds like the white leghorn lay white eggs. In the US, it's a cultural norm to find white eggs more appealing, so most eggs for sale there are white.

In the UK, we tend to prefer the look of brown eggs, so the majority of commercial hens here are ISA browns or blacktails, which lay brown eggs.

In the US, eggs must be washed before sale, so for food safety reasons they have to be refrigerated. It means that commercial premises can keep hens in filthy conditions, and the buyer of the washed eggs will never know.

In the UK, they can't be washed, so the eggs must be laid in more sanitary conditions... commercial premises end up having rollaway nest boxes so the egg is immediately removed before a hen can poo on it.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 04/11/2023 16:25

I don’t know anything about USA eggs and so I just wouldn’t take the risk.

Oddly I always take the eggs off the warm shelf in the shop and put them in my fridge thinking that’s where they need to go, even though I know they’re ok to be left out.

43ontherocksporfavor · 04/11/2023 16:26

How gross ! Thought USA would do things better.

True, you can't argue with ignorance, but a lot of folk on this thread weren't arguing with ignorance intentionally. They just wanted to help the ignorant.

The OP only said that you are in the US.

Are you trying to say now that, as I’ve suggested would have been helpful, you did in fact make the context about US egg production clear? Please do enlighten us about the details I’ve apparently skimmed past.

MumblesParty · 04/11/2023 16:36

I’m sure you’d know if they were bad, the smell would be disgusting. Do you have any left in the box? Put them in a bowl of water - if they sink they’re OK.

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 16:43

@Buffypaws Thank you. Yes you can’t argue with ignorance. And people try to derail a thread and when I make the point even clearer - they think that’s ‘berating’. Thank you and the other helpful replies and the other posters who can actually READ and COMPREHEND the original question 😬

I’d suggest you step away from the thread OP or certainly stop being so rude. Your posts are being deleted left, right and centre for breaking the Talk Guidelines.

I suspect you will be fine as you seem in fine fettle 😝 but wish you luck anyway.
