Eating unrefrigerated eggs

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 15:32

Recently moved to the US. we picked up some eggs about 3 days ago (taken from the fridge) and I forgot to put them back in the fridge when I got home. I just had scrambled eggs. What are the chances I’ll be sick?

How will we know. If they smelt fine and tasted ok they should be fine but you never know I guess. Can you get eggs from the farmer like here (in farm shops etc) that aren’t washed etc? I wouldn’t want to refrigerate eggs tbh but if that’s how they do it that’s how they do it.

It sort of does matter “why the eggs are white” because if it’s just a standard egg - then it doesn’t have to be put in the fridge.

however - either way - a rotten egg stinks to high heaven so you would have known immediately

We already covered this – eggs in the USA should be refrigerated.

TurquoiseDress · 04/11/2023 15:45

We never put our eggs in the fridge, they always stay in the cupboard

MaggieFS · 04/11/2023 15:45

If they didn't smell bad and you thoroughly cooked them, you'll probably be ok.

TurquoiseDress · 04/11/2023 15:45

Oh sorry just seen it's US eggs, not UK ones

You do need to refrigerate eggs in the USA because of the way they are washed and dried before sale, which removes the natural protective coating of the shell.

I never knew that!

aharddaysnight · 04/11/2023 15:46

Very, very unlikely to become sick. Eggs should be refrigerated in the US and there is a risk of becoming ill if left out more than two hours but really you'd be unlucky if anything came of it. Throw the rest of the eggs out though, if there are any left.

Ohthisisimpossible · 04/11/2023 15:46

Rotten eggs smell so bad you have to leave the room - honestly, you’d know!!

I didn't know that

Every day is a school day!

@Shopper727

Thank you for that. And yes next time I will get barn fresh, just had to get refrigerated as that’s what was available at the time. I usually prefer eggs that can be stored at room temps like back home.

@MaggieFS Thank you. Hope I’m ok 🙂

@ButDaddyILoveHim Thank you for responding. They didn’t smell although I haven’t smelled a bad egg before so unsure if smell alone is a good indication.

You'd know! The stink of an 'off' egg is unmistakeable. If they didn't smell, they're most likely fine and so will you be.

ComfyBoobs · 04/11/2023 15:47

Why are you asking about US eggs on a UK forum? How would we know?

I think in the USA they wash eggs so they're cleaner, but in the UK, our farmers have to keep their eggs clean by keeping their chickens in clean conditions, and it's illegal to wash them. That keeps the protection on the egg, and hopefully a happier, less covered in shit, chicken.

lljkk · 04/11/2023 15:48

Bleached? Are you mental? They;d make you very sick if they were bleached, the bleach would get right thru shell. White eggs come from white hens, btw, that's what white color tells you.

Eggs should be turned over once a while if out of fridge. Otherwise they last weeks at least outside fridge.

I bought some eggs in September I probably won't finish before end November. Not been in fridge. They last fine.

@3WildOnes Really 😒 Thanks for the helpful reply.

It is helpful, given the vast difference between eggs in the USA and other countries it makes perfect sense to ask the people who are most likely to know

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 15:49

@ComfyBoobs Mumsnet isn’t exclusive to UK users. Other Americans use this site as I do. Besides my opening post stated clearly that I have recently moved to the US. Thats how you will know what I’m talking about.

You will be fine. My British mother who has lived in the USA for many years never put her eggs in the fridge.

TripleDaisySummer · 04/11/2023 15:50

Apparently they also prefer breeds that have white eggs unlike here where brown is more usual.

lljkk · 04/11/2023 15:50

I grew up in states & we didn't refridgerate our eggs then either.

They didn't last as well as British eggs, esp. in hot temps, but they still lasted. It was a boyfriend from Nebraska who advised turning them over once in a while. We also didn't refridgerate butter if it was salted & not very hot.

You'd know if you smelled a rotten egg!

The thing is though, on a mainly U.K. forum we don't have experience of us washed eggs. While you'd know if it had gone rotten in the 'stinks of hydrogen sulfide' way, I don't know if the lack of protective coating means that there might be other issues eg bacteria which release non-smelly toxins getting in and multiplying.

My best guess is that you'll probably be ok as they were cooked but obviously don't make a habit of it.

HelloFreshed · 04/11/2023 15:51

@iminvestednow Complete moron for asking if I can get sick or possible salmonella from eating bad eggs….yea, because that’s impossible 🙄

@Gymmum82 @RJnomore1

You are suppose to store them in the fridge in the US. I’m not talking about UK eggs.

you have to be on the wind up

LakeTiticaca · 04/11/2023 15:52

If they smelt and tasted OK you'll be fine . Rotten eggs usually smell pretty rank
