What is wrong with my knee ?

Intermittent pain since a fall on a bus 2 years ago. Rest seems to help more than anything. Standing seems to aggravate it.
Recently I've found that I set of for a walk in discomfort which soon turns to disabling pain where I'm hobbling along . Then suddenly the intense pain disappears and I'm left with a bearable ache.
Other times when out for a walk the pain remains at limping level.
I can't understand how the pain can go from barely able to weight bare to virtually pain free in one stride.

Without knowing the mechanics of the injury or location of pain its hard to say but I studied sport's therapy many years ago (lapsed now) and this sounds like it could be a meniscus tear? Best bet is to make a dr's appointment though!

Thank you @Anotherdayanothermoodswing (like the user name!)
Seems so many hurdles to get over to talk to a GP and then see a physio.
But I think I'm going to have to start the process.

I had a knee problem, sounds similar. Eventually diagnosed as a bone bruise by a consultant after an MRI. I had to go private after shockingly bad NHS physio

Bone marrow oedema was the proper term for it.

Thank you @MintTrackies .
Did you find that your knee could go form very painful to hardly painful at all in a second ?

Torn meniscus, as PP says

It was certainly variable.
