Two week wait for suspicious mole and panicking

DD is almost 16 and has had a diamond shaped mole on her chest since 1, possibly birth.

Recently however the edge on one side no longer looks smooth and the community dermatologist at hospital has referred her under the 2ww for removal. He says he's not comfortable with the way it looks and would rather be cautious.
She's worried now but I'm trying very hard to keep a cool, inside I'm v anxious.

Doesn't mole removal simply mean that something sinister could return?
How likely is it to be nothing do you think ? Doctor wouldn't elaborate much...
Thank you

At 16 it's highly unlikely to be anything sinister. Moles also change during adolescence (and even in adulthood!) If it makes you feel better, I had a brand new one show up in my 30's that looked irregular and inflamed and suspicious as fuck, and it turned out to be absolutely fine.

They will remove it, and test the removed mole for cancer. If it does turn out to be cancerous they'll start by removing a wider area around where the mole was and go from there.

I agree with @Rosecat22

They are likely to remove just as a precaution.

I’ll warn you though, my results took months to come back.

I’ve had four moles removed. All “red flagged” under 2ww. All fine. They are cautious and it’s low cost so easier for them to refer and whip it off if GP has any doubt. Agree that at 16 very unlikely to be anything sinister

Thank you everyone. Her appointment is in a fortnight so I'm hoping and praying it'll be ok .
