Extremely sore under nail tip on thumb

Oh my good god, it’s so painful!! Doesn’t look like there’s anything under there, but it’s a bit red and swollen. Absolutely makes me jump if I catch it…

Got magnesium sulphate paste on to try and draw out whatever’s in there, but wondering what on earth has happened! It’s not the edge of the nail bed, it’s in the centre under the nail tip. I’ve cut it right back to try and see if there’s anything there, but nothing obvious (like a splinter for example).

Any advice at all please?

I often get little splinters under there, often invisible, and they hurt like hell. I don’t know that there’s much to be done about it other than the magnesium paste and time.

Thanks @Helenahandkart it must be something like that!

I have something like this and it’s been going on for years. It just can’t get to the bottom of it! The gentlest tap feels like the pain of stubbing a toe, it’s weird. Sorry I can’t be more helpful!

Could it be a whitlow?

newnamenellie · 27/10/2023 16:33

No I don’t think so @SeaPool it’s not in the area around the nail where they normally appear. It’s under the tip of the nail, in the middle, as though something sharp has gone down there but I don’t remember that happening nor is there a foreign body as far as I can see!

My only other thought is a thorn if you've been gardening or blackberry picking recently. Tiny little thorns you can barely see seem to cause the most disproportionate pain.

Sounds really uncomfortable, hope the magnesium sulphate does the job.
