UTI or something else? Getting worried

I made the foolish mistake of googling and now I am quite scared!

A week ago, I developed what I assumed were UTI symptoms: very frequent urination and a tender feeling each time I needed it. Best compared to the sensation when you’ve been desperate for wee on a long car journey! No burning or stinging when going though.

Managed to speak to a doctor and was proscribed a 7-day course of Nitrofurantoin, which they said was going to start making a difference after 48 hours. I’m on the fifth day and and it’s made no discernible difference to my original symptoms! I am prone to menstrual cycle bloating but seem to be bloated with this as well. Google has obviously told me this these are all symptoms of ovarian cancer and now I’m terrified and I can’t get an appointment for another week.

Has anyone any words of wisdom/similar experience and it just be a persistent UTI?

I’m in the same boat. Please keep me updated.

I just wanted to point out that the symptoms of normal ovarian cysts and ovarian c are more or less the same and normal cysts are really common. I had normal cysts and was bloated with the urine urgency and frequency, so do loads of other women! Don’t let google freak you out

Iv had cyst for years never caused any symptoms. Maybe a sharp twinge here n there.

but fr thr last 8/9 days iv been so bloated, stomach cramps all over stomach from upper to lower. Wind too. I think it’s more stomach/ colon issue then ovarian

I had the same, the Nitrofurantoin did absolutely nothing so I went bk to gp and got prescribed a different antibiotic and within 48 hours all symptoms had gone x

When you saw the GP did you say 'I have developed bloating' or did you say 'I think I have a UTI?'

Because they would likely get two very different responses.

Go back, say you are absolutely no better and your biggest symptoms are bloating and needing to wee more often, with no stinging or burning when you go. But most of all don't panic.

Thank you for all your messages, I really appreciate it. The GP said that there was no bacteria detected in my urine sample and that the bladder was irritated. The UTI-like symptoms eventually went away. They examined my abdomen and couldn’t detect anything untoward. Thanks again for the advice.

@Unluckyone I know several people who've had exactly what you describe over recent weeks. My sister's family and a few other friends. They say it's like a low- level stomach/ abdominal bug which drags on and on. My sister thought it was a UTI at first because of the frequent peeing but she had no stinging and urine tests showed no blood or bacteria. None of them have actually had vomiting and they say it's not like a normal tummy bug which is more extreme but then goes away within a few days. It's lasted weeks.

All this makes me wonder if there's an unusual bug doing the rounds at the moment. I even wondered if it might be connected to covid.... all of these people have had covid at some point, not necessarily recently but it does make you wonder as there must be all sorts of longer term issues which we don't necessarily know about yet

Unluckyone · 04/04/2024 11:00

How long did it take to go away?

Unluckyone · 04/04/2024 11:01

How long did the frequent urination last? And the stomach ache.
i had frequent urination for nearly 2 months now. N the stomach cramps only 7 days

lizzowhiz · 04/04/2024 14:23

My sister's had it for a month. Not consistently bad; She said it got a bit better after the first two weeks but sort of comes and goes in waves. Her dh and son have had the stomach ache but not the frequent urination. They're convinced it's the same bug as the stomach issues are so similar

Unluckyone · 09/04/2024 08:15

I’iv got the frequent urination, it’s calm one two days and then flares up. Etc. iv had bladder scan, all clear. Iv had bloods and urine tests, all clear. It’s jus so confusing.
now iv been referred to Incontinence. They assume it’s my pelvic floor. But I don’t leak it anything. So that’s confusing :( I don’t think il ever be ok agaib

Examining your abdomen wouldn’t detect cysts unless they were large. You need a pelvic ultrasound for that. I suggest you go back and request that seeing as your GP hasn’t
