Plenvu bowel prep, colonoscopy this afternoon!

I started Plenvu last night at 7 PM as instructed for my appointment this afternoon. At first it seemed slow to work, however from about 10 pm was then in and out of bed until 4 am on the toilet and even vomiting. Made me feel like I have noro! Second drink at 6 AM, I've managed half and vomited again. I don't know how much I've kept down. I'm going to try the other half soon but I just feel so nauseas so I know it's going to come straight back up.

Anybody had this prep? I'm worried about the consequences of not absorbing the second drink, although I do feel like my bowel is completely empty. I've had 2 colonoscopies in the past but never used this prep, usually it's only been one lot of prep and have never been this ill with it. Although it clearly says on the leaflet can cause nausea and vomiting.

I am just wondering why there is a second drink, and why is it different from the first one? The second is two sachets mixed together and is extremely salty, the first actually wasn't that bad and the vomiting didn't start until well after I had drank it.

I've never had the plenvu before, but I'm going to have to have my first dose this afternoon... not looking forward to it! I did take some laxatives last night so hopefully there won't be much left later if I can't do it. Just going to drink broth and juice all day and not eat. I don't think I'll risk it even though it says I can eat till lunchtime today.

It says on the information from the hospital to call them if you can't complete the drink or have vomited. What time is your appointment?

theduchessofspork · 18/10/2023 07:58

Give them a call

I think I mixed it with squash - I think you have to sip it quite slowly if it’s making you sick - have a separate glass of squash on the side to alternate.

henrysugar12 · 18/10/2023 07:59

Just double checked the information and it says if you vomit, don't take any more prep and call them for advice.

121gigawatts · 18/10/2023 08:17

Ah right OK. I will call them at 9. Admission is at 12. I feel the second dose has definitely worked even though I vomited alot as back and forth to toilet again!

I think that's best @henrysugar12 I ate relatively normal up until 3pm (no high fibre) but probably should have just done liquid diet all yesterday.

@121gigawatts how did it go in the end?

Bugger me I just drank the first dose. Doing it all tonight as I can't do it in the morning. The first dose is bloody vile!!!

MissHoollie · 18/10/2023 17:20

It's very possible you have a bug ..it shouldn't cause vomiting

Have you tasted it? I've literally just had the first dose and was gagging the whole time. I feel sick now.

121gigawatts · 18/10/2023 17:56

I've had my done and home now. The nurse said apparently vomiting is a common side effect. My bowel was clear enough too so definitely worked. Do not want plenvu ever again! I'm sorry to say @henrysugar12 the second lot is even worse! Definitely better when you alternate it with orange cordial or lucozade. Good luck, hope it all goes well.

Glad it worked! The first lot was bad enough... going to do the second dose at 9. Dreading it!
It's the first time I've had plenvu, I'm sure the other stuff didn't taste quite so awful- but it has been a few years now! It also doesn't seem to have had much of an effect just yet - I was expecting to be spending more time on the loo!

121gigawatts · 18/10/2023 20:56

I have had a couple but been 10 years since my last and definitely weren't as bad as plenvu @henrysugar12 the second took a couple of hours to kick in for me but nurse told me today the second usually has more of an effect on people. Hopefully because you followed liquid diet for 24 hours too it will be easier. Are you a morning appointment? I was starving by the time I went in, I got seen about 2.30 in the end and home at 4 but not had much of an appetite since I got home as I'm full of air now!

I had plenvu this weekend, for the first time. Bleah.

I've had 3 colonoscopies before and never had that much trouble drinking the preparation. However, I did find the consequent bathroom visits were scarcely painful, much better than in the previous few weeks or with the other preparations. 😀

henrysugar12 · 19/10/2023 08:35

Well as I'm not sure if 12pm is classed as morning or afternoon... I did the prep as if it was a morning appointment. Oddly I found the second one not as bad as the first. But I was gagging with both!

Up and down all night to the loo. Not feeling that hungry but my mouth is so dry. Feeling a little dehydrated!

henrysugar12 · 19/10/2023 14:16

Glad that's all over and done with!

RicherThanYews · 19/10/2023 14:21

Apparently there is a tablet form of prep that you can take if you don't cope with the sachets. I'll know that for next time.

121gigawatts · 19/10/2023 21:05

Glad it's all done @henrysugar12 my stomach is still bad today, anything I eat just going right through me. My body definitely did not react well to plenvu!

Oh no! I'm supposed to be travelling tomorrow so that's going to be fun!
I'm feeling okay, but a little sore. Need my bed!

121gigawatts · 19/10/2023 21:14

Did they take biopsies? I feel a bit sore and think it's that. Hopefully you will be OK for travel, glad its all done with for you, I did have a lovely sleep last night, think more so because of the sedation so hopefully you will get some good rest now.

henrysugar12 · 20/10/2023 13:10

Yes they took loads! Never that many before I don't think, but this time they gave me a sheet with how many they took. Sedation did naff all and I didn't sleep at all.
