Tetanus vaccine

Are we meant to have our tetanus updated every 10 years or not as I have searched online and get mixed messages.

I have asked my gp if my vaccines are in date and have been told I have to pay for that information so just wondered if there is a need to have a booster.

No. Once you’ve had 5 you only need one if you ever have a dirty wound/dog bite, or are going somewhere with poor medical care. Or have a needle stick injury.

Hi,

I think they don't give boosters after 25 unless the person is in a high risk job (horse poo, digging soil or puncture wounds) because people can get reactions to the vaccine after enough shots.

I'm up to date because I was in a digging job at 25, and at 35 I got a hefty puncture wound from a hamster, but otherwise then wouldn't have gone beyond my age 14 booster.

Great thank you. So do you have 5 during your childhood as I know I had all my childhood immunisations.

Three as a baby, one as a preschooler, and one as a school leaver.

Thank you, that’s really helpful.
