Umbilical cord,, question

serant · 08/03/2008 09:53

My 1st baby is a week old has a black cord, which i know is good and that it will fall off shortly. I am not sure it should smell so foul though?? Do they get infected??

I have not done anything with it or put anything on it other than having water on it in the bath.

There may be a little bit of infection. Try cleaning round it with a cotton bud and warm slightly salted water.

Get the MW to take a look when she comes round.

Get it checked, but as long as the skin around it isn't red and hot it should be OK.

serant · 08/03/2008 13:39

Thanks, midwife due sunday.I will clean it with a cotton bud.

if it smells like rotten egg its normal, it is actually gangrene that makes the stump fall off. as long as there is no redness around the stump indicating infection or weeping.

serant · 08/03/2008 13:45

No i cant see any redness, looks a bit weepy, smells bad ? not sure rotten egg smell. lol

squeeze some breast milk onto it. the milk is anti bacterial and my midwife recommends it. my lo's cord stayed on for ten days btw

They do stink though. Weepiness and smell means that it's rotting. It's normal, granted that there is no infection. Won't last long.

i had my babies many yeats ago and they use to give out antiseptic wipes and powder,,I am sure if there was a prob the midwife would be able to advise you/DOES NOT SOUND THAT UNUASL but of course if it worries you take advise.

madmommy6 · 09/03/2008 18:11

How's it go with the MW.Hope you and LO are both doing well.

emma1977 · 09/03/2008 20:57

Sounds normal to me- umbilical cord stinks and goes black before it drops off!

serant · 11/03/2008 22:58

Were both doing well, thanks.
The midwife thinks its ok, cord now off & there is a bit of bleeding, as it rubs on nappy. I do use my milk for sticky eyes, will give it ago on the button!!
