Lump on wrist (pics attached)

Evening all,

Just wondering if anyone had similar, and anything I can do for it?

Developed a lump on my wrist last week, quite hard to touch, so thought maybe a cyst?

Anyway waking up this morning, it seemed bigger. Was sat at the dining table, stood up putting pressure on wrist, to which can all I can describe as a popping sensation, but underneath the skin. It changed shape, with an additional strange straw shape line running along it and further down wrist. (Sorry didn't get a pic of this). The lump has now gone down a bit, however still present.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the lump? Is it okay if it has popped? Or should I just leave it do its own thing?

Sorry never had a cyst before.

TIA xx

My mother had one when I was a child and promptly whacked it with a hammer to disperse it.

It worked and she carried on with her housework etc

Circa 1974.

Brilliant, thank you.

Will try your mothers approach, maybe not a hammer though 😂xx

A very heavy hardback book will do. I've had one for the best part of 20 years. It comes and goes, different shapes and sizes.

Hellocatshome · 16/10/2023 22:54

Yep a ganglion. Apparently people used to hit them with a Bible not because of the religious content but because it was the heaviest book in the house.

I didnt hit mine with anything and its gone now but has it for a couple of years. I cant actually remember it going just remember one day realising it wasn't there anymore.

Stressybetty · 16/10/2023 22:56

I've had one for years, GP said not to hit it as it could cause more harm. Said not to worry about it unless it started to affect the movement of my hand or wrist

Thighdentitycrisis · 16/10/2023 22:56

It’s possibly a ganglion. I had one for years but it disappeared on its own.

I think it’s caused by swelling of the tendon, over use

some say hitting it with a heavy object is where the term bible bashing originated. (Not sure that’s true)

PrimaryHeadteacher · 16/10/2023 22:58

Not sure it is a ganglion
I had a fab one as child
GP hit with the family bible- ok various tools including a hammer
Woke up one morning and it was gone

MrsCarson · 16/10/2023 23:06

Don't hit it.
You could end up with a lot of bleeding.

Thank you all for your advice 😊Its more comfortable this evening due to reduction in size, so may only resort to a bible if becomes uncomfortable. Just found the popping sensation and being under the skin and no puss(?) coming outwardly very strange. Will just let the little fella do his thing, and hopefully disappear in time.

Thanks again all ❤xx

I had one the size of a pea on the side of my wrist. It was there for a while and then disappeared.

HowNice23 · 17/10/2023 07:48

I had a ganglion on the back of my hand but it was like a pea/bobble it wasn't long. And yes I did hit it with a book and it went away. Best get the doctor to take a look.

HeartandSeoul · 17/10/2023 08:13

Anyone else getting flashbacks of Peter Cronk’s failed attempt at hitting a ganglion cyst with a book on an episode of Doc Martin? Ouch 😬

Raluca2026 · 11/06/2025 05:43

Have you discovered what it was? I have something sort of similar.

Francestein · 11/06/2025 05:53

Don’t fucking whack it. You’ll break bones. Get it scanned. I have had two removed from my wrist because they were dislocating my thumb. Go to GP.
