How does appendicitis present itself?

northernbird1988 · 15/10/2023 10:39

I've had pain in the centre high in my stomach for over 24 hours. I've now got a niggly pain lower right. I'm touchwood not vomiting, no fever etc just feel lousy with this pain as I can't sleep.

Does it sound like it could be appendicitis? Or would that present differently?

Yeah, usually starts centrally then localises to the RIF. Usually accompanied by loss of appetite, some nausea, sometimes a prior change in bowel habit and generally feeling lousy.

northernbird1988 · 15/10/2023 10:49

Does this sound like me? It's been a pain where I've circled and now it's still there but also a niggly pain LR. I'm not especially hungry but I have eaten little bits x

It start centre/ left and moves to the lower right. Classic symptom is you can't stand up straight. Extremely painful not just niggly.

AudiobookListener · 15/10/2023 10:52

I think the classic start is pain near the navel, moving to lower right after a couple of hours. But the pain is likely to be more than 'niggly'. No harm in getting checked out though.

Dogsitterwoes · 15/10/2023 10:53

Lower right pain is often constipation.

northernbird1988 · 15/10/2023 10:55

Ahh I've had this central pain for over 24 hours now it's going on for about 30 hours and I've got the lower pain as well as the upper pain rather than it's moved.
I had been constipated this week but when the pain started yesterday I was a bit loose.

I don't know whether to go to out of hours, 111, a&e or just ride it out until my GP opens tomorrow Sad

As weird as this sounds, can you stand on just your right leg without pain in the right side.

Mine started in the centre and then went to the lower right. All the doctors I saw got me to stand on just my right leg, bloody hurt.

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 15/10/2023 11:05

You generally (but not always) have a fever. Have you taken your temp?

CissOff · 15/10/2023 11:06

My DD had it and didn’t have a fever or loss of appetite but had the pain. I would try and see the out of hours GP.

northernbird1988 · 15/10/2023 11:19

I can stand on my right leg but it does make the pain worse. I've not got a fever just a normal temp x

@CissOff really! What were her symptoms? X

Just pain around her belly button that moved to her lower RH quadrant. I think the Drs operated because I was insistent that I knew it wasn’t right for her (and to shut me up!).

The surgeon did come and apologise afterwards - it was infected and needed to be removed. He acknowledged that presentations can vary.

I had my appendix out 16 years ago. I had an ache in lower left, loss appetite for few days. I remember pain started on Sunday night, went to doc Tues, admitted me, got taken out wed/Thurs early hours. No temp though. However my daughter had appendicitis 6 years ago, very ill, vomiting no appetite, took her to A&E doc said it was gastroenteritis keep fluids up etc. 4 days later temp went up to 39.8 no better took her to gp she said appendix!!! Now now now go to a&e, offered to ring ambulance it was that urgent. Anyway her appendix had burst inside, no operation but admitted, IV antibiotics for 7 days....wasn't pleasant. Can you lie on your back and raise your feet few inches?? Or lie on your back with your knees up. They're the tests the doc did on my daughter. Let us know how you get on. Good luck.

trip to ae! Sounds like it, someone needs to examine you to know

DappledOliveGroves · 16/10/2023 23:42

When I had appendicitis it started off with niggling stomach ache and within about 4 hours had moved to my lower right side and the pain got worse and worse. I also couldn’t pass urine without extreme difficulty. When I got to A&E I was bent double and in agony. No vomiting though and no fever.

Itwasamemoment · 16/10/2023 23:48

My daughter had acute RIF pain spreading from umbilical area .
My son had niggling pain directly in RIF region for two months but pain only became acute three years later.
Both had appendicitis. One at 10 and son at17 whist taking hisMaths A levels…he literally revised on the ward !! Took his A level a week later under supervision!

Mine started in the centre of my stomach and moved to my lower right side.

One of the tests they did was to press down quite hard where the pain was, it didn't hurt when they pressed down but it really hurt when they stopped pressing.

I was operated on the same day.

Duckmylife · 11/09/2024 19:13

I was 9 when I had appendicitis. I remember waking up with a sore stomach on bottom left and bottom right sides and the pain getting progressively worse throughout the day. We went to a bouncy castle place. Jumping helped the pain for a split second but it was agonising sitting down and waiting for our session to start.

That night I woke up and was sick twice, and my mum took my to out of hours. I was operated on the next day.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 11/09/2024 19:17

I had it a four years ago.
my stomach felt gripy, and that was quite high up. I also felt really tired and unwell, like flu.
the discomfort then shifted to my lower right and became more specific and painful, though still tolerable.
apparently you can’t fart if you have appendicitis 🤷‍♀️

Completely pointless going anywhere other than A&E.

Despite being a paramedic and 99% sure it was really appendicitis (central stomach pain —> lower right —> couldn’t stand on right leg + gradually upset stomach brewing) DH went full denial and called 111, sent to urgent care, sent to hospital, appendix out next day.
