Could this be something other than threadworms?

DD (7) has always been very sensitive in her private area. I've just assumed she has sensitive skin down there, used soap free cleanser for her in the bath, and put nappy cream on when she's sore. Over the past year or so she's become really itchy in her vagina and her bottom, on and off, didn't even think of threadworms because she's just always been itchy (although worse over the last year). About 7 months ago the itching was always worse at night, but I couldn't see any signs of threadworms, in her bottom or in her stools. Then the itching went back to just being on and off, and not only at night. Fast forward to now and she's really itchy again, and it's worse at night. Again I can't see any signs of threadworms. She also has a slight discharge in her knickers sometimes. I'm waiting for a call back from a doctor about it, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar, and what was it? Might the doctor suggest worm medication just incase, can the symptoms of threadworms come and go?

I should add that I have spoken to a doctor about it in the past, about the general itching, and it was suggested it was vulvovaginitis so no particular treatment needed. I decided to contact the surgery again as it seems to be worse.
