Dreams- lovely or not

I am dealing with the not so lovely side...... nightmares.

I have been experiencing episodes where I am aware I am dreaming, I am aware of what is going on around me... say my partner calling my name trying to wake me up.... that happens often but I cannot come out of my nightmare. During these episodes I am twitching or punching and I am aware of it but cannot stop it.

What are these episodes!?

My ideas were sleep paralysis or lucid dreams but I thought sleep paralysis renders you immobile and I thought lucid dreams were positive 🤔

It’s awful isn’t it. I used to get these a few years back, I would know I was having a nightmare but couldn’t wake up from it. In my head I was trying to scream and shout to try and get my DH to shake me awake - but I also twitch - have never looked into what it was called but does seem to be sleep paralysis maybe.
Most awful one was where I had demons coming out of a cupboard from a house I was staying in and sitting on my chest stopping me from breathing - I felt I was screaming to get woken up but not actually making a sound and couldn’t move. I would never been able to sleep in that room again. Very old house/pub. Lucid dreams aren’t always positive but some I can direct. I also dislike the false awakening ones that seem to end up in waking loops. The brain is a funny old thing.

Interesting! During my nightmares I am not trying to come out of it, like how you stated you try to scream so DH would wake you up etc......I am very much actively still in them. When I am punching it is that I am acting out what is happening in my nightmare. So still very much in the nightmare just aware of what is going on around me and aware of my actions if that makes sense.

I am so sorry you experienced that! That sounds so scary!

I didn't know lucid could not be positive. So are there lucid nightmares perhaps?
