Tonsil Stones… Help! (Warning, gross images)

I have recently discovered that tonsil stones maybe responsible for my breath smelling like sht (it really does).
During conversations I can see the look of repulsion on peoples faces when they finally get a whiff. It’s ruining my life.
been to the dentist, hygienist and the doctor. They couldn’t see anything wrong. Everything appeared in order.
Then one day I coughed and about 5 tiny little pebbles appeared in my mouth. They smelt like the same kind of sh
t that my breath smelt of.
after a bit of research I bought a tonsilstone removing kits.
So far I’ve gotten about 10 out. I can only find two crypts and they have been mined!
However my breath still stinks of the same sht, the tonsilstone sht!
Does anyone have any tips of how I can find more?
How deep are those crypts?
Is it likely I have more crypts that I can’t find?
I’ve added a picture of my latest hall for some of the stone perves out there…

I suffer from tonsil stones, they're grim. I bought a little kit on Amazon which has a pokey stick to pop them out and a tongue scraper which is a game changer for staying on top of oral hygiene. You have my sympathies they're gross.

TheChosenTwo · 29/09/2023 08:30

I use the back of a hair grip (i do throw it away afterwards!!) to have a good poke about, there are a lot of hidden areas back there. I don’t get them often, maybe once a month or so, I can feel them and have a little dig about!

LibbyL92 · 29/09/2023 11:15

I sometimes get these.

there’s an amazing mouth wash to use along side the kit called ‘the Breath co’ (Amazon and Superdrug)

it’s a game changer! It’s quite expensive but your breath will be fresh all day.

Cryptexplorer · 29/09/2023 23:57

I think we may have the same tongue scrapper! Complete game changer...
I have all the removal tools, although it seems like a three handed job. I just can't seem to find the bastards. I can't feel them either but they must be there because of the smell.
My oral hygiene is tippity top, but I will try that mouthwash out.
I'm really surprised that dentists or dental hygienists don't offer any help with them. I have phoned all the dentists in my area.
My OH is unprepared to get their hands dirty too.

I get them occasionally and what helps is brushing and flossing every night and then gargling with salt/mouthwash with alcohol , focusing on the tonsils. If it gets too much, consider getting the tonsils removed privately.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 30/09/2023 00:44

I get them and usually poke them with my finger. You just have to apply pressure to the right place. Mind you I've had them for about 25 years so am very used to poking them now! I find eating things like popcorn make them way worse.

jlpth · 30/09/2023 00:47

I wish I knew. I have the same problem!

wandawaves · 30/09/2023 00:50

My daughter had her tonsils out because of tonsil stones. She's so happy she did it.

YourSpleenIsDamp · 30/09/2023 00:50

This might be a daft question, but - doesn't it trigger your gag reflex if you poke your tonsils?? 😱

OooohAhhhh · 30/09/2023 00:55

I discovered one tucked away behind 'the flap' if you know where I mean. When I tried to get it out my gag reflex went into overdrive.
Any tips?

This is fascinating! How do you know if you have tonsil stones? Can you see them?

ladypenelopesfan · 30/09/2023 01:21

Another sufferer here.

I just pop them out with my fingers (after washing hands of course)

I know when they are building up because I start to get a nasty taste in my mouth.

I don't think you can prevent them if you have larger than average 'pits' on your tonsils that collect debris.

Cryptexplorer · 30/09/2023 03:43

It does set off your gag reflex but I’m getting used to it. Unfortunately everyone else n the house is not getting used to the sound I’m making.

the taste in my mouth and stink of my breath has alerted me to them.
I can’t believe I had never heard of them
before…
My most successful removal tool so far has been the pipette.

Aw bless you op this must be a nightmare. Hope you find the others soon. Maybe a referral to ENT? But might have to be private if you are not clinically I'll with them?? Don't know - there are some docs on Mumsnet that maybe could advise.

OooohAhhhh · 30/09/2023 09:37

I knew I had one from randomly shining a torch in my mouth! I saw something small and really white behind the tonsil flap.
Also sometimes when I'm eating I get a gritty texture in my mouth, I thought it was bits of filling coming out maybe, but now I'm thinking it may be tonsil stones coming loose.

Sortmylifeout52 · 30/09/2023 10:58

Sounds grim.

That mouth wash ( The Breath company) that someone recommended, is excellent. Its often on offer at £9.99 too! It leaves your mouth feeling fresh all day.

However, I'm not sure if it would be strong enough for tonsil stone breath..but definitely give it a go. CB12 mouth spray is good too.

Hope you succeed in getting the critters out OP.

Hyperthyroidkitty · 30/09/2023 23:23

@bobcat2424 I can see mine. Little white things poking out of the tonsil crypts. They're so bad that the doctor in a and e told me I have them today even though she only looked at my throat for a split second.

@Cryptexplorer I find I feel a bit run down, and then it reminds me to check and when I do I have loads of the little bastards.

vipersnest1 · 01/10/2023 00:18

Bear in mind that tonsils are like cauliflowers, OP. Food can get trapped in the spaces and this can then trigger an episode of tonsillitis.
I had this and eventually had my tonsils removed as an adult. It wasn't pleasant, but well worth it.

Shadypaws23 · 01/10/2023 00:41

You find you know where they hide after a bit. I am a bit obsessive over making sure I don't have any because yes they do smell vile!
Sometimes I don't get any for months and then loads but I pop them out and then gargle with salt water
