I’m travelling in E Europe and started having diarrhoea on Tuesday evening. I haven’t eaten anything since then and haven’t had any bowel movement since Weds evening. But… drinking (Dioralyte/water) is giving me really bad stomach cramps - so bad that I went to A&E last night.

They weren’t really interested in my cramps because they found I had very high blood pressure (190/100). They treated that and sent me home. I’m sipping fluids, not quaffing them, but why is drinking causing me pain?

(My bp is borderline high in normal times. I submit readings to my GP every 6m and am not on medication for that.)

Thank you in advance for any tips or insights.

dioralyte contains aspartame - is that something you can tolerate? Have you tried just bottled water?

Thanks @Chestnutz. That’s a good point. Thank you. I tried a few mouthfuls of water and that made me crampy too - but not as bad. I’ll stick to that. Little and often.

OP, try and get hold of some branded coke - the real stuff, and the fully sugared stuff.

Shake it flat so that the carbonated bubbles go and sip it.

It'll hopefully sort out your stomach pains and will replenish your fluids. I was told by a Health Visitor many years back that Coke's ingredients have something which settles stomach pain.

Definitely worth a go. Make sure it's totally flat though.

How long are you in E Europe for? When do you get home?

It sounds like you need more investigation tbh.
