It seems as if he's been permanently ill with one thing or another since he was about 3 months old. I looked back at my diary and he's had something - coughs, colds, ear infections, chest infections, unexplained "viruses" and now tonsillitis - at least once a fortnight for the last 6 months. I know it's that time of year, and he's exposed to all sorts of stuff with an older sister, but she was never this ill when she was a baby, even once she started nursery. We're getting through Calpol like there's no tomorrow, and it's totally destroyed his sleeping patterns, as the moment he shows signs of improving he gets sick again and is up half the night then we're back to square one.

I'm contemplated taking him to the doctor to ask for a referral to a paediatrician, but wonder if I'm going to be laughed out the door. He's putting on weight nicely and is the happiest baby I know when he's not poorly, so I don't really think there's anything seriously wrong but it just seems so relentless. I know small babies get sick but this surely can't be normal...

Am I over-reacting to this?

Hello, I'm sorry your son is poorly. I have twin sons who are now 5 years old and they had very similer symptons, lots of chest related infections and ear infections. I took them to a homeopath eventually as was so fed up of anti-biotics and them suffering. I wouldn't say it was an overnight change but they were much better afetr 3 months of treatment. My DS3 who is the same age as yours doesn't seem to have the same probelms so far so maybe it isn't necessarily the same for siblings. Good luck, I know it is worrying and exhausting, believe me I was stressed and so concerned. But they are now very healthy and lively 5 year olds. Insist on seeing a specialist iof you think it may reassure you. We had x-rays to check the cartilage (sp?) in their noses wasn't too big and causing blockages but there was nothing obvious. Wishing you all the very best
