Strange neck/throat sensation

Good evening, curious to know if anyone else has had this before?

for the past few days I keep getting a strange sensation around my neck, more to the front and left side… it feels almost like something is pushing my neck, a bit like the sensation of wearing a scarf but obviously I’m not, and it feels quite numb and slightly tingly. It feels like it comes and goes but when I do feel it it lasts a couple of hours, then will fade away and then return.

i don’t have a sore throat or anything and seem well in myself, however the rest of my family have had a very mild cold which for some reason I haven’t caught - I’m usually the first to get ill!

does anyone know what this could be?! I’m stumped. Many thanks ☺️

Forgot to mention, it feels quite tight too, and I don’t think I can see any swelling in the area but it may ‘feel’ slightly fuller. 🤔🤔

Shingles? Watch out for a rash. If you do get a rash you need antiviral meds asap and keep away from anyone who might be pregnant or immunosuppressed.

Shingles is always just on one side btw.

I had this a week or so ago. Then I got an awful headache- a bit like a migraine but all over my head. Even my ears hurt. I went to bed around 7pm to sleep it off and woke tired but okay the next day. I have felt a bit washed out for a week or so since but I don’t feel unwell.

Interesting will keep an eye out, thank you!

Oh gosh that sounds awful! I suffer regularly from migraines and bad heads etc so wouldn’t surprise me if this develops into something similar to what yours did. Thanks for your reply.

I had this a couple of years ago. I described it as wearing a turtle neck that's a little tight. the doctor took bloods and I think I had an X-ray. Turns out mine was anxiety, and strangely once the doctor said this the symptoms went away (maybe because the anxiety of what was causing this sensation 😅

Ooh that’s interesting that it went away for you! Anxiety is awful and the side effects from it can be really unusual, can’t they! I’m glad it improved for you and will wait and see if mine improves too 🙂

Have you considered that it could be your thyroid? I have thyroid nodules and experience similar symptoms. If it doesn't pas within a few days I would pop to your GP and explain, and ask them to check your neck for swellings. Even if they can't see/feel anything they may refer you for an ultrasound.

Very good point about thyroid, will keep an eye on it and go and see gp if it is still happening by the end of the week. My thyroid levels where checked with a blood test back in June however I’ve heard people can sometimes have normal thyroid levels but can still have issues like these. Thank you!

Yeah, I've got a visible lump at the bottom of my neck – it's a benign but fairly large colloid thyroid cyst (plus a few smaller ones). All thyroid blood tests have come back normal. Definitely see your GP if your symptoms don't go away :)

Oh bless you! If you don’t mind me asking, did your neck symptoms appear suddenly? Did you have any other symptoms happening, too? The neck thing seemed to come on suddenly for me, and has got more and more prominent each day and almost feels like someone is holding their hand around the side of my neck, and it is starting to travel across the front more.
it is Feeling a bit tingly aswell, and I am starting to convince myself i can feel the tingling under the chin area! Maybe I am just hyper aware now!?
Looking in the mirror and having a feel, I am starting to convince myself I can feel something.. will be calling my Gp tomorrow 😱😀

I first noticed a lump in my neck about a year ago. In hindsight, I'd been having trouble with swallowing and a pressure/choking sensation when I lay down for quite a long time. I sometimes get stabbing pains and numbness in my head and face. The biggest lump is about 3cm but because it looks benign on ultrasound and it's not affecting my thyroid levels (so, in theory not causing symptoms) it's no further action unless it grows so big I can't eat or breathe...
I'll attach a pic...
Having said that, I wonder whether you have a trapped/pulled nerve in your neck or something?

Thank you for taking the time to post a picture! It is very helpful to me. 💕

I managed to get a GP appt this morning and he had a feel of my neck and said my thyroid does feel enlarged and I also mentioned some other symptoms I have been having such as irregular periods, tiredness and hair loss etc… I’m having my bloods done and also an ultrasound on the neck to check it out. So just have to wait for my refferal!

thank you for your comments and especially the photo. I hope it doesn’t cause any Further issues for you and it eventually settles down. 😊

That's good your GP is looking into it – hope you don't have to wait too long for the scan, and that you get some answers.

Do pop back with an update when you have one!
