Knee pain/lump

I've been struggling with a painful knee for a few weeks now. I'm unsure of what I've done to it exactly. The pain is a constant niggling ache in my knee and at times radiates down towards foot. For the last few days I've had a noticeable lump when bending my knee (it's the outer side of my left knee). It's a softish lump that disappears when my leg is straight.

I'm not in agony and I'm managing to get around (school runs etc) just wondered if anyone has had similar. There's no heat or bruising from it. I'm in my 40s and carry extra weight so I'm well aware that a GP will advise on lifestyle.

I've added an image of the lump for reference.

I had a weird lump on my left knee, a bit squishy and was almost a bit pointed when knee tightly bent, it was there over a year, but one day noticed it had gone. Think it must have been just fluid? Wish I’d asked about it as I now have something similar that has appeared at back of knee joint ! So I’m thinking might see if one of the nurses at the surgery can shed some light on what to do about it.

It's so weird isn't it.... I'm not screaming in agony and I'm walking ok. It's just a niggly ache.
When I was doing a bit of googling a thing called a 'bakers cyst' kept popping up. I think it's a cyst that appears behind the knee.

Hope you get sorted x

I get this occasionally and for me it is swelling. Usually mean I need to go back to basics and work on activating/strengthening my glutes and hips. When I do this it all subsides and it all feels much more stable

Thanks, I’ve looked up bakers cyst, what an odd name, and it describes it perfectly! Sounds like I have a fluid problem there due to some damage, must be trying out different bits of my knee.

@spottygymbag I did wonder if I'd initially injured my knee from wearing some chunky boots that sort of threw of my balance a little....

@Panackelty that's good that you have some idea of what's causing it. I've done an online request for my GP today as I've struggled to walk a little. Was your previous lump painful or knee painful at all?

My mum has struggled with her knees for many years and the thought of it happening to me isn't very appealing

This new one at the back hurts when knee bent, the one at the front didn’t hurt at the time but was very visible when bent, but knee had started to get sore in general when exercising.

@AnxieteaAndBiscuits we have weak knees in our family too, and loose ligaments. So naturally I took up ultra trail running 😂

It actually turned out to be really good because it's forced me to strengthen all the hip, bum and leg muscles.

If you can, maybe see a physio who can help you with a program to slowly strengthen everything.

And yes I've been there with shoes too- some lovely chunky sneakers that were quite a bit heavier than what I was used to!

@spottygymbag I've managed to get a physio appointment for Monday so hopefully they can help.

Yep, the chunky soles look great but kill the knees lol
