Help me figure this out before midwife and dr today...

I am nearly 38 weeks pregnant. I went to the dr 3 weeks ago with ROTTEN thrush and was told to leave it, could use canesten externally if I HAD TO but nothing else. I said it was very bad, she took a look and said get over it. 8 days later I developped diarrhea and 12 days later it hasn't stopped. The thrush is insanely bad, am thinking that the diarrhea is related (sent off a sample last week that seems to be taking ages to come back) and need to know I'm doing the right thing going in and raising hell today. Also have midwife coming for home visit today...is it too weird to ask her to have a look?

I don't understand why she told you not to use canestan internally. I did at about 38-39 weeks pregnancy. If you don't get it cleared up, there is a chance it will spread to the baby when the baby is born.

go to your doctor; ask your midwife as well, that's what she's there for.

My dr is very odd. Same dr told DH recently (when he went with a mole that was growing) that "we all die of something." Couldn't face changing drs during pregnancy, but am glad to hear it's ok to use internal. I don't want my son to end up not breastfeeding due to MY thrush.

OMG Change your GP at once!

merryberry · 05/03/2008 08:51

blimey, wee touch of nutteryness there turtle from your doc. and the diarrhoea could be related to the thrush, i used ot see that when i was nursing .

canesten themselves make this recommendation for pregnancy ie use their vag. tabs...

i had a lass work for me recently who writhed with this discomfort so often, i seem to remember her finding some relief by major diet restriction - think it was no yeast, no sugar? could you bear finding out more about that? don't know if i could, food is my only remaining pleasure at 40+3!

turtle23 · 05/03/2008 09:09

Merry...thanks for that. I was made to feel like I was personally harming my child by even suggesting internal treatment. I said"It's really really bad, discharge is constant, uncomfortable, and I really want to have sex again for first time in months...please can I have pessaries or something?" She said"No, apply cream externally and see how you go for a week or two." "But how does that help the internal infection?" says I. "Just give it a while longer, it's doing no harm" says quack.

You doctor is an arse!

Sorry - no advice, just the need to tell you to change doctor as soon as possible! You need someone who's judgement you trust with not only your own health but that of your baby.

Tommy · 05/03/2008 09:15

your MW wil be perfectly used to looking at ladies' fannies so I wouldn;'t be worried about asking her to have a look either! IME they are usually more sensible than GPs (and knowledgable) about such things and will be able to advise you

LilRedWG · 05/03/2008 09:16

Don't know if I'd bother seeing the GP today as she'll probably only raise your blood pressure. Get yourself some Canestan Tablets and ask your MW's advice.

Midwife has just been and said I must insist on pessaries. Will get them at 3.

I know, but a) it's helpful to get them on prescription due to money at the mo b)I want to tell her that she is a stupid cow c)I have to go to the dr today anyway for lab results. Otherwise, I probably would have just bought them yesterday.

How did you get on Turtle?

turtle23 · 06/03/2008 12:48

I got what I wanted. Had to talk her into it. Also told her that I was writing a letter of complaint to practice manager.

Wow! I take it you'll be changing GP then.

turtle23 · 06/03/2008 13:37

Yes. Am waiting til baby's born (week or two) then moving the whole family to another surgery.

I had never-ending thrush during my last pregnancy.

I cut out yeast. Had 2 baths a day with lavender oil in, and put lavender oil on a pad. This seemed to work as I was thrush free for the last few weeks - heaven!

Good luck!
