2 week wait not 2 weeks?

I have recently been referred by my GP to the hospital for an urgent cancer screening.
I called the hospital today as I hadn’t heard from them and they have given me an appointment for 3 weeks time. This will make it 3.5weeks from referral to appointment. I questioned this and the lady told me they are allowed up to 6 weeks for referrals is this correct? Everything I have seen states 2 weeks but is that just a target?

I waited 3 weeks. I expected to wait a little longer due to the strikes and Covid backlog etc. I think it's a guideline and we were lucky to be seen in 3 weeks tbf

The cancer waiting times have changed very recently. There are no 2 weeks referral time but a target time for diagnosis (though only 3/4).

NHS providers will also be expected to ensure three quarters (75%) of patients are diagnosed or have cancer ruled out within 28 days of a referral

Most cancer diagnosis require biopsy so they will normally still have to see patients as early as possible.
