Is anyone knowledgeable about why oral health is important to preventing heart disease and what the relationship is between the two?

I have heard there is a connection but hoping for a simple explanation to avoid an Internet rabbit hole.

One dentist told me that it's not really known if it's correlation rather than causation. Poor lifestyles tend to have both diet both of which contribute to heart and dental problems.

I think part of it is about inflammation. Gum disease causes inflammation and this can damage the heart / blood vessels.

or something
